Meet Starfire.

She has nesting boxes.

She knows where the nesting boxes are.

She just… has other plans.

Today I found her curled up inside a bag of hay that was meant for the rabbits, looking at me like I was the one interrupting her. 😂

She lays eggs in the most random places, and at this point I spend more time looking for Starfire than I do collecting eggs.

I swear every pet has that one weird habit that makes absolutely no sense. What’s the funniest or strangest thing one of your animals does?

This old chicken coop had to come down. 🪵🐔

After months of putting it off, we finally started tearing down the original chicken coop on our little farm. The more we pulled apart, the more obvious it became that rebuilding wasn't worth it.

This is one more step toward building a safer, cleaner space for our chickens, ducks, turkeys, and rabbits.

If you've ever had to tear down an old coop, what was the worst thing you found inside?

I finally tore down the old coop.

It was put up in a rush when our old coop had collapsed

After winter it had already been destroyed, the birds had been moved into the garage, and every time I walked past it I thought, “I really need to deal with that.”

I felt awful for my neighbors, I hated looking at it but I kept walking past it.

Now it’s gone, and for the first time I can actually see what this side of the property could become.

I think this is what I want the streams to be for a while. I don’t want to act like I already have a finished farm, but taking the parts of this place that clearly aren’t working and fixing them one at a time.

So now I need ideas, because I want this place to be our little rescue ranch.

What would you do with this space beside the garage? More covered run space, a better outdoor setup for one of the animals, storage, something completely different?

I’m keeping track of the answers because this is probably one of many projects we tackle live.

Let me ask you something!

If you could go back and redesign your chicken coop from scratch, would you do it the same way?

One of the biggest mistakes new chicken owners make is building for Day One instead of Day 451.

I know I did. When I first started, I was way more focused on what looked cool than what would actually be easy to clean.

But here’s the thing: if something takes an extra 20 minutes every week to clean, it doesn’t take long before you start dreading it.

Now that I’m rebuilding things around here, I’m trying to approach it completely differently.

So I’m curious, if you could start over, what’s the ONE specific change you made (or wish you had made) that saved you the most time or hassle?

Drop a real example from your setup in the comments, I’d love to learn from what actually worked for you.

Mine is streamlining our feed and watering processes, so I don’t have to do it daily .

I genuinely don’t know what animal I would tell somebody to start with.

Chickens seem like the obvious answer, but they need more space than people think and predators are always a problem.

Ducks are funny and usually pretty easy to like, but they can turn clean water into soup in about four seconds.

Rabbits are quieter and take up less room, but the heat worries me more with them.

And I would absolutely not tell somebody to start with turkeys lol.

So now I’m curious, if somebody had a small property and had never owned animals before, what would you actually recommend?

The other night I randomly went live on TikTok, and a few of us ended up spending way too long trying to get Peanut to trust me enough to hold her. 😂

It reminded me how much I missed streaming.

Most of you probably don’t know this, but I used to stream all the time. I think it’s time to bring it back, except this time I want to build the community on Twitch.
