I have avoided talking about this BUT ......before I see a flood of big round bonnets worn for 1860s living history, I need to say something. First off, this is a show and directors are allowed to do what they want. These bonnets are works of art. Someone spent a lot of time on them and they are quite beautiful and required an enormous amount of work. There is no doubt that the straw on the new Little House bonnets is lovely, but would the Ingalls women wear anything like this in 1869? Absolutely not. Even if they were wearing bonnets handed down or old bonnets, they would have cut them down to a more fashionable shape. The bonnets in 1869 were tiny and with these giant bonnets they would have had plenty of straw to make something not 30 years out of date.....Yes at least thirty. These bonnets do not have points. Starting in the early 1850s, bonnets had points or cheek tabs that reached under the chin. By 1865 points shrunk considerably, but were still there as you can see on the extant bonnet I posted from the second half of the 1860s. You may say, "They were in the wilderness. They wouldn't have had the latest fashions." Small bonnets had been in style for 5 years by 1869 and the easiest way to update an outfit is with a new bonnet. The sleeves on the dresses (in the picture from the series) are narrow and the armscye is higher as appropriate to 1869. One would not wear an updated dress with a super old fashioned bonnet. Another argument I have heard in support of these bonnets is that director would not want shade on the actresses' faces. Appropriately shaped bonnets from the second half of the 1860s do not and did not shade the face at all.....not even a little bit. Fashionable bonnets were not worn to shade the face. That is why you have a parasol. The hats that A Milliner's Whimsy by Anna Worden made for the show are lovely AND period correct. These bonnets are pretty, but do not use them for bonnet inspiration in the 1860s.

We found the good stuff! If you have have ever seen an extant mid-19th century bonnet, the lining is made from a natural colored open weave cotton that looks kind of like cheese cloth. In my wanderings, I found a bolt of fabric that looks just right. For a limited time, our kits and bonnets will have linings of this cotton making them look even more like the real deal. 😀

Stage is set for another workshop with Mackenzie Anderson Sholtz. Spent the early morning putting out original Regency era bonnets and looking forward to this year's Corsets and Cravats where Paige Myers will teach us all how to best care for our original garments.

There is no question that THE color for 2026 is green. This shade has me singing along with Kermit while playing with velvet leaves, feathers, and the gorgeous drape of our new Olive shaded silk ribbons.
