On most farms, a ram that won't mate with ewes gets written off as useless and sent to slaughter. Michael Stücke keeps only those rams, and his whole flock is gay.

Stücke, 52, has raised sheep since 1995, and he's openly gay himself. When he learned that around 8% of rams want nothing to do with ewes and get culled for it, he put the word out to other farmers: send him the ones headed for the butcher.

Every new arrival even gets a test, placed near ewes during breeding season. If he stays uninterested, he joins the herd. Once they're together, Stücke says, "a lot of action happens."

The wool became "Rainbow Wool", a nonprofit he founded in 2023 with his husband Johan and friend Nadia Leytes. Johan didn't get to see how far it reached. Diagnosed with cancer in 2021, he died this past January.

Before he passed, he told them the project had to keep going. So it does.
