Every great victory leaves a legacy, but some were deliberately left in the shadows. In May 1949, the pioneering Tuskegee Airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group dominated the U.S. Air Force’s first-ever Weapons Meet—the original "Top Gun." Despite their undeniable triumph, the record books listed the winner simply as "UNKNOWN" for 46 years.
Unknown Forty-Nine was founded to reclaim that stolen history and ensure the legacy of those early pioneers actively commands the skies today. While their tactical brilliance is cemented in history, a massive gap remains: today, less than 4% of the U.S. aviation industry is comprised of Black pilots.
It is time to change that narrative. The era of missing recognition is over.

In May of 1949, the Tuskegee Airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group entered the military’s first-ever weapons meet and proved they were the absolute best of the best. Flying the mighty P-47N Thunderbolt, they outperformed competitors in P-51s and P-82s to win the inaugural "Top Gun" title.
Yet, for 46 years, the Air Force Association’s yearly almanac listed the winner of that historic event simply as: Unknown.
We're here to disrupt that narrative and reclaim the victory.
