People often ask what makes us different.

The truth is, our journey started long before House of Colour Pflugerville.

Before becoming a stylist, Magan spent over a decade as a professional photographer. Through her lens, she learned how color and light can completely transform the way a person is seen…and how to help people feel beautiful while doing it. She developed an eye for the details most people miss and learned how to help people feel comfortable in front of the camera and, often, a little more at home with themselves.

But her eye for structure started even before photography. Magan has a degree in Interior Architecture, and while the structure and fit of clothing may not directly correlate to architecture, the foundation of seeing proportion, balance, line, scale, and harmony began there. Architecture trained her to notice how individual elements relate to the whole. Photography taught her how those elements are seen on a person. Styling brought all of it together.

My path was different.

After serving in the Army as a Soldier for over a decade and being medically retired, I spent the 20+ as an Army civilian working in clothing design and development, where fit, function, construction, and garment performance were not just concepts. They were requirements.

I learned how clothing is built, why certain cuts work, and how design choices impact the way a garment fits, moves, and performs on the body. Ultimately, that work was about helping the wearer feel equipped, capable, and ready to do their job.

But I think our greatest education didn’t just come from our past careers.

It came from our own transformations.

Both of us have experienced significant body changes through weight loss. We know what it is like to look in the mirror and see a different body. We know what it is like to see a skewed version of ourselves and struggle to recognize what is actually there. We know the frustration of clothes that don’t fit, the uncertainty of figuring out what works, and the challenge of rebuilding trust with your own reflection.

Behind the scenes… were we trying on random clothes or doing market research to learn which brands work best?

We research brands, fits, and quality for our clients. If we don’t know this, how could we be expected to teach you? Here’s more about why these trips matter so much to Dutch and me:

👚 We learn how different brands actually fit real bodies.
🧢 Sizing varies dramatically between brands, even when the tag says the same size.
👗 We identify which cuts, rises, lengths, and silhouettes consistently work best for different body types.
👖We discover hidden gems clients might otherwise overlook.
👕 Our job isn’t to recommend what works best for US; it’s to know what works best for YOU.
👔 We compare quality and construction firsthand.
👙We build a mental database of what works for different body shapes.
🥻We stay current on trends without blindly following them.
🩱We can make more accurate shopping recommendations for clients.
👚We save clients time, money, and fitting-room frustration.
👗 We test whether a brand’s marketing matches reality.
🧥We gain confidence recommending pieces because we’ve actually worn and evaluated them.

Behind every confident recommendation is a lot of hands-on research. We spend time learning which brands are worth the investment, which fits flatter different body shapes, and which pieces live up to their promise. It’s all part of helping our clients shop with confidence and dress with intention.

Can we talk...about how powerful TALKING really is in the dressing room?
Too often, we hear clients (REGARDLESS OF GENDER) say they’ve stood in a dressing room, staring at themselves, thinking “Ugh, nothing fits me.” Sound familiar? It’s frustrating. It’s defeating. And it’s a lie your clothes are telling you.

But here’s the truth: it’s NOT your body’s fault. It’s the clothes. The cuts. The brands. The lack of guidance. The lack of understanding.

When we shop together, we talk it out.
We try things on (spoiler: we’ve already pulled 90% of the pieces we know will work for your shape-because we do this for a living!) and we have real conversations about what fits, what flatters, and why.

We talk about your body architecture, how to shop smart, and how to stop blaming your body for bad design. You’ll leave feeling empowered, not defeated.

Shopping can (and should!) be fun. Zero stress. Zero shame. Maximum confidence.

On behalf of some of our most recent mother/daughter appointments (ahem, yesterday!), we wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day! Whether today is about spending lots of quality time with your people or taking some time to be quietly pampered, we hope it fills your cup and you know how special you are.

I am constantly amazed by the relationships I see in my studio — healthy, happy, loving, jokey. I admire it and I love to see it; we all hear how HARD and challenging it is to raise kids and to see the beautiful relationships that exist makes me feel really encouraged as a mom to 10 and 12 year girls.

Please know that for every story or piece of advice you’ve shared, I hold space. Relationships like these in the photos? They’re priceless. ❤️

Your closet called. It has opinions. 🤭

Some of them are spicy. Some of them are practical. A few might be personally attacking the “almost right” pieces you keep trying to make happen.

But here’s the thing: style gets a whole lot easier when we start asking better questions.

👉Do I actually wear this?
👉Does it work with the rest of my closet?
👉Does this color do anything for me?
👉Is this “fine,” or do I actually feel good?

Swipe through for a few unpopular opinions we stand behind as stylists.

Now we want to hear yours: which slide hit the hardest? Or better yet, add your own unpopular style opinion in the comments. Might be time for part two.

May the 4th be with you. (On Dutch’s behalf, a huge Star Wars nerd, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to say it!)

And today, we’re celebrating some of our favorite groups of FOUR who have come through the studio.

Four friends. (Or relatives!)
Four seasons. (Sometimes all different!)
Four totally different personalities.
Four people learning why the same color can look completely different from one person to the next.

Group color analysis is one of our favorite things to host because there’s something really special about watching everyone learn together. You start to see the differences more clearly. You understand your own palette better. And honestly? It’s just fun to have your people in the room cheering you on when the right colors finally click. (Color magic! 🪄)

So here’s to the foursomes who brought the laughter, the questions, the “wait, THAT’S my color?” moments, and the group photos we still love looking back on.

The force is strong with a good color analysis crew.

Ready to book your own group of four? Send us a message and we’ll help you find a date.

👋 Hi, hello!

We are in the middle of our final day at the and it’s been so amazing to have some time to connect with our friends from across the country, lean into learning, and have brain space to think and dream. This is the first conference Dutch and I attended together.

Did you know that he’s the first male personal stylist in House of Colour? It’s been really amazing to have him here because … surprise! … color analysis and style and feeling good in your clothes isn’t only for women. I love all that he brings to HOC but specifically enjoy the team that we are — a dynamic duo with two very diverse but complimentary backgrounds.

We’ll be scribbling down all kinds of notes as we fly back to Austin tomorrow and see clients in our studio on Friday. We’re excited for all that’s to come, and wherever you are in your style journey, we’re excited to meet you there.

Now, back to conferencing and caffeine! 🥳📝

We worked with two women recently: Tatiana just turned 70, and Nan just celebrated her 75th.

Both of these appointments were gifts from their children to celebrate their birthdays.🎂

And this reel shows a few happy moments from the fitting room:

A little song & dance.
A golf swing.
Big smiles.
LOTS of laughter.

When something fits just right, you don’t stand there analyzing it. You feel GOOD!

Style isn’t about chasing trends or dressing a certain age.

It’s about putting on something and thinking,
“oh… this feels like me.”

At any stage of life.

How often do you catch yourself asking…
“…but where would I wear this?”

Let’s rethink that.

Your life is happening in the in-between moments:
The school drop-offs.
The grocery runs.
The quick coffee stops.

That’s where your clothes actually get worn.

Not every outfit needs a reservation or a reason.
You don’t need an event to get dressed.

You can love what you’re wearing on a completely ordinary Thursday.

Wear the dress.
Wear the “too nice” top.
Wear the outfit you’ve been saving.

Because the goal isn’t to have a closet full of beautiful things…

It’s to actually enjoy wearing them.

Even if it’s just for a cart full of groceries.

The photos in this reel are of our amazing client, Kat.
We’ve worked closely with her to build outfits that feel beautiful, fun, and unique, just like her!

These were taken during a Wardrobe Edit where we created a personalized lookbook, something she can come back to anytime she’s getting dressed and wants a little inspiration. 🪄✨
