Humans survived for centuries without data centers.
Nobody has ever survived without clean water.
Yet as the artificial intelligence boom accelerates, enormous new data centers are being built around the world, and some can require huge amounts of water to keep their equipment cool.
Inside these facilities, thousands of powerful computer chips run around the clock.
That generates an incredible amount of heat.
Some data centers deal with that heat using evaporative cooling systems, which can consume large quantities of water every day.
In places already struggling with drought or limited water supplies, that has created an uncomfortable question.
What should come first?
More computing power, or protecting the water communities depend on?
Supporters argue that data centers are essential infrastructure for the modern economy and that newer cooling technology can dramatically reduce water use.
Critics say companies should not be allowed to put local water supplies under pressure simply to fuel the race for bigger AI systems.
Technology can change the world.
But every server, algorithm and artificial intelligence system still depends on something much more basic.
Electricity.
Land.
And water.
We can build a future without sacrificing the things humans need to survive.
