Epic Drama is at hand. In March of this year, brilliant and innovative automotive photographer Bill Pack reached out with the opportunity to collaborate on a book with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, telling the story of the Indianapolis 500 in a new way. The challenge being that my calendar for the year was already full, and that Bill would need to work at more than double his standard pace to meet the deadline.
We were given total access to the cars and archives in the vault of the Museum, and got to work. Bill set up a studio of sorts in the basement of the museum shooting a total of over 850 images. I spent just 3 days there, beginning with an extensive tour, then a couple days in the basement and library. After my time at Indy, I acquired 27 total books on the Indy 500, the cars, and the people, and dug in. The stories were moving. Some exciting; some sad, moving me deeply.
The book features 34 winning cars across the 106 years of the 500. It is an art book, combining Bill's incredible photos and my text, with the amazing design work of the award-winning Lionel Ferreira.
This week we received the first production copies. The book will make its official debut in December at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.
