"Please do not mistaken my non-participation as being lazy and uninterested, you see ... I have seizures."
"Believe me, I want to participate in class, show off my skills, run around in the sunshine and kick that ball ... many times these things are just not possible ... I have seizures. It is difficult to explain exactly how I feel inside after a seizure ... I am non-verbal."
Each seizure can leave someone with a debilitating headache for days, dazed and confused, in a fog, nauseous, antsy or simply feeling like a train hit them. Top this off with the side effects from traditional seizure medication and you have a double whammy.
Always have a little extra patience and compassion. You never know what storm someone is going through.
As a parent of a young lady that has seizures, I am her number one advocate and strive to surround her with loving, compassionate people that have the patience that she needs. Be aware of how your child is being treated, ask questions and observe. You are their biggest cheerleader. These little warriors have earned their stripes and should be treated as such.
