My great-grandparents, Felix and Josie, were married in Pittsburgh in September 1940 - nearly 86 years ago.

Their wedding took place at Ascension Church on Pittsburgh’s North Side, a small Lithuanian parish founded in 1906 on Metropolitan Street. The church remained active until 1962, when it was demolished to make way for an industrial park.

I was able to find their original marriage license application, the minister’s return certificate, and even the parental consent form my great-great-grandfather had to sign (my great-grandmother was only 19, which was below Pennsylvania’s legal age of majority at the time).

Back then, it only cost them $3 to get married - including 50 cent tax and consent fees.

I was inspired to dig into this because just a few weeks ago, another Felix got married in Pittsburgh… me!

Although the Felixes eventually moved out of the city, I’m grateful to be able to return to my roots. It’s pretty cool knowing that almost 86 years later, another Felix is starting a new chapter of his life back where it all began.

Oakland’s Syria Mosque in 1975.

Once one of Pittsburgh’s most remarkable landmarks, the Syria Mosque was an ornate Moorish Revival concert hall that hosted everything from symphonies and political figures to major touring acts throughout much of the 20th century. It stood as a cultural centerpiece in Oakland until its demolition in 1991.
