New York State Police Advisory | Extreme Cold

An Extreme Cold Watch is in effect for Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, and Warren Counties through 1:00 p.m. on January 24. Dangerous “feels like” temperatures are expected, ranging from 20 to 40 degrees below zero, with the coldest conditions anticipated from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon.

Please take steps to stay safe:

• Avoid travel if possible. If you must go outside, dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

• Watch for signs of hypothermia, including confusion, uncontrollable shivering, difficulty speaking, extreme fatigue, and stiff muscles. Seek medical attention immediately if these symptoms occur. If help is not available, warm the person slowly with dry clothing, blankets, and warm non alcoholic liquids.

• If stranded in a vehicle, reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Run the engine for about 10 minutes each hour, open a window slightly for fresh air, and ensure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow or debris.

• Use generators safely. Safety guidance is available at dhses.ny.gov/generator.
