Flying Fox Studio

Flying Fox Studio I create and sell items using fabric made from certified organically grown cotton. I don't do formal And by extension, so are you!

I strive to use sustainable resources in my creations, with an emphasis on certified organically grown cotton fabrics. There are many super-talented designers creating printed organically grown fabrics that are often works of art alone. Their designs not only make my products special, but I am also supporting their efforts. My goal is to be as transparent as possible in describing my materials and

their origins. I want my products to be as safe and healthy as possible for the people who make them, for the people who buy them and for the environment. I continue to educate myself daily about sustainable agriculture, fair trade issues and environmentally friendly practices and technologies and will pass along what I learn as I grow my business in a sustainable way.

I was curious which Harmony Art fabric was the most popular and which had been in production the longest. The answer: "Whispering Grass." But Harmony says one of her personal faves is "Eyes of the World" (pictured in my toddler jumper). I think it's my personal favorite too (though Whispering Grass is mighty nice--especially striking in B&W).

Adah Pearl takes a sidewalk stroll. She is wearing a 2T-3T jumper handmade by the crafty Flying Fox out of certified organic 100% cotton fabric (Global Organic Textile Standard, http://www.global-standard.org/, certified by Control Union, http://certification.controlunion.com/). Laser-engraved coconut buttons. The lovely print is by Harmony Susalla of Harmony Art Organic Design. For info about her textiles and their certification, visit

Designer Harmony Susalla, whose organic fabrics are a joy to sew with (her sateens are without par), often weaves social networking into her creative process. It's not unusual for her to ask fans what they like as she tweaks her designs. Says she: "I really love having so many people involved. Now the fun and patience begins as I wait to see what YOU create with it."

PLEASE VOTE! Woke up this morning and decided to reprint Whispering Grass in an orchid shade rather than pink. Do you prefer the more purple (left) or more pink (right) version? Anyone willing to commit to ordering a roll will have there vote count 5x. :)

Here's a link to an article I wrote about the organic cotton farming project in North Carolina and its mission to create a closed-loop supply chain ("from dirt to shirt") in North Carolina. Hats off to all the dedicated visionaries who made it happen.

Organic, hand-dyed embroidery floss hung out to dry last week at Fiberactive Organics in Raleigh, N.C. Says owner Julie Mullin: "Our embroidery floss is made of six strands of organic cotton that has been hand plyed and hand dyed. Our dyeing technique allows the color to flow over the cotton naturally, giving it an earthy, antique look." Order online at www.fiberactiveorganics.com.
