This weekend we celebrated and Showered our daughter Eryn Bedford and our lovely son in law, Lee as they await the birth of their first baby, and our second beautiful grandson. In all the hubbub of hosting a dinner for over 45 people on Saturday night, and accommodating 10 dogs and 11 people for three days in our home, I took no pictures. Hopefully, someone was gracious and took photos to share. I created a sound wave weaving of the baby’s fetal heartbeat—a beautiful sound translated into beautiful handwoven art.

When I was a history teacher, I always wondered why certain eras were called the stone, bronze, or iron ages. Rhetorical thought I know—these eras were named because these are the materials that stood out because they survived the ravages of time. Unlike wool, cotton, flax made by those who quietly created items made from them—sails for sea going ships, canvas for tents, and most importantly cloth that swaddled us at our births, and shrouded us in our death. Makes one think differently how history should be told.

To regard the knitting Madonna as a meek, passive figure is a mistake. Fiber arts are too hastily devalued because of their association with women—yet sewing, knitting, and other techniques are essential in clothing a people and constructing better futures for communities. The knitting Madonna invites those who encounter her to experience fiber arts as a journey to cocreate with God.

I love Shopping local and the concept of Front Yard businesses! It’s always best to buy from local artisans, makers, creators. Good for the local economy, strengthens neighborly bonds, and the regenerative quality to the social fabric is beyond priceless.

Supporters said the resolution will boost neighborhood entrepreneurship and make areas more walkable.
