Airplane lavatories still include ashtrays for one simple reason: safety. Smoking has been banned on most commercial flights for years, but aviation is built around planning for the unexpected. If someone ignores the rules and lights a cigarette anyway, an ashtray provides the safest place to fully extinguish it instead of creating a much bigger fire risk by tossing it into a trash bin. It's one of those small details that quietly makes flying safer for everyone.
Aviation is full of design choices like this that seem outdated at first, but actually exist because safety always comes before convenience.
