Sharing started as a way to hold myself accountable...
My story is in the fabric of my brand so I feel an obligation to tell it. I've had so many people approach me with stories of their own struggles with dependency, whether themselves or with a loved one.. not all of these stories have a happy ending.
Recently someone gave me a whole new perspective that's been hard to shake.. Oftentimes I will tell people how lucky I am that being from a place, and a family, where addiction is so commonplace that mine seems to pale in comparison. The moral being, i got out, and therefore I'm one of the lucky ones..
She said to me "you weren't that lucky though, you started drinking at fourteen. That's so young."
And she was right.. nobody gets out of this kind of dependency unscathed. The trauma that fueled my binge drinking and ultimately, the chance that I took on facing that pain without the comfort of alcohol, none of it was "lucky". It was actually an incredible burden, but one I try to carry with grace and purpose.
