Field Notes: From Concept to Cloth.

I’ve always imagined what my people might have worn if we had been allowed to continue becoming, uninterrupted. A future where ancestry, body, and environment exist in continuous dialogue.

For these pieces, I moved out of the studio and into nature. I’ve only ever shot my steel corsets in fixed spaces, but this time I needed water. It felt ancestral, aligned with my late grandmother’s birthday and AAPI month approaching. The same waters that carried those before me, that sustained life and held loss, now hold these bodies.

Across Southeast Asia, especially in Filipino regalia, there is an emphasis on sheer, breathable textiles, layering, and fluid drape. Fabrics like piña, jusi, and organza in garments such as the barong Tagalog or terno create a language of softness, air, and permeability. I carried that into both skirts, draping them to float, gather, and move with the body rather than sit stiff or fixed. With John’s, I added appliqués inspired by barong Tagalog embroidery.

Jenn’s corset draws from islands on a map, the chest plate separated and reattached, an island, an immigrant, a body no longer in its homeland. Parted, but still connected. For John, the asymmetrical chest holds absence, something missing in identity, while the heart remains covered. Protected, rooted, intact despite fragmentation.

Both pieces finished with white ribbons cascading down the back, personifying continuity and the presence of ancestors behind us. The movement embody traditions of drape and fastening, never rigid, never fixed, always shifting with breath, air, and the body.

Field Notes: From Concept to Cloth.

I was thinking about how things are held together and what happens when they’re not. Ribbons are gestures of softness that refuse to stay fixed, while safety pins interrupt the surface, making the act of construction visible. Influenced by Galliano’s deconstruction and layering and Vivienne Westwood’s approach to structure, this look lives in the space between control and collapse. It is not about perfection, but about the moment just before it gives in.

At the center of that tension is the metallic star corset I made, a piece that quite literally holds everything together. The star, something usually distant and untouchable, is pulled into the body and forced into structure, molded into something wearable, restrictive, and almost fragile despite its hardness. It becomes a point of tension between armor and adornment, where protection and exposure exist at the same time.

That tension is also carried through the energy of early 2000s dirty pop, especially Britney Spears, where performance, sexuality, and control blur into something both polished and unraveling. There’s an intentional messiness to it, a kind of glamour that sweats, smudges, and refuses to stay pristine. It informs the attitude of the look, not just how it’s worn, but how it exists: seductive, defiant, and slightly chaotic, like it’s mid performance and about to come undone.

The corset anchors the look, giving it a sense of control, while everything around it resists that control. The ribbons loosen, the pins disrupt, the silhouette shifts between intention and accident. Together, they create a system that is constantly negotiating with itself, never fully resolved, always on the edge of undoing.

This piece reasserts the Hiraya Glori essence. Where whimsy, camp, and sensuality meet at an intersection. I wanted to approach Valentine’s Day without being too “on the nose,” I instead translated romance through silhouette and scale. I was inspired by Moschino’s campy energy that still remains editorial and high-fashion, I engineered a six-paneled mini skirt with by an exaggerated wired bow. In red organza, I wanted this piece to be a nod to my very own Barbie; exaggerated, hyper-feminine, and knowingly artificial.

Field notes - from cloth to concept

This piece was inspired by the drama and draping of wedding gowns, particularly those designed by Vivienne Westwood and Schiaparelli, where structure and movement are in twilight.

The corset was designed to feel exoskeletal & armored; rigid, and sculptural, while the skirt was constructed to contrast it through softness, volume, and flow.
The look references Hera. Authority, ceremony, and power embodied through the ebb and flow of structure.

Rasheed as Apollo, Blaise as Hyacinthus.
This work was inspired by the story of Apollo and Hyacinthus, with a focus on classical drapery and how fabric interacts with the body.
Apollo is represented through a one piece, open chested dress with a hood. — exposed; radiant.
Hyacinthus is interpreted through a draped trouser designed to resemble fabric meant to be tucked in, paired with an asymmetrical top. — intimate; fluid.
Both garments were engineered using chiffon to emphasize movement and softness.
