Don’t Wake the Dreamers
Sometimes a dream starts with two friends, a long drive, and a conversation that changes everything.
Long before JK Performance became what it is today, there were two friends, Jamie Johnson and kavanaugh , driving to Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, with big ideas and even bigger dreams.
We didn’t have everything figured out.
We didn’t have a perfect business plan. We didn’t know exactly where this dream would take us. We just knew that we loved creating things, we loved the western lifestyle, and we loved the idea of building something together.
Somewhere along that drive, the idea of becoming business partners started to feel less like a “what if?” and more like a “why not?”
And that little dream became JK Performance.
Then Came Made + Found Midwest Market
When we had the opportunity to participate in the Made & Found Midwest Market, it felt like one of those full-circle moments.
The slogan for the market was:
DON’T WAKE THE DREAMERS
And honestly, it couldn’t have been more fitting for us.
Because that’s exactly what we were doing.
We were dreaming.
Dreaming about what JK could become.
Dreaming about creating a business that was more than just selling T-shirts.
Dreaming about having a place where people could come in, pick a shirt, pick a design, customize it, and walk away with something that was uniquely theirs.
Dreaming about building something that represented us—our love for western culture, sports, agriculture, creativity, and our community.
And now, there we were, loading up the car, packing shirts, displays, totes, tables, and all the things that come with taking a small business on the road.
It was exciting.
It was exhausting.
And it was incredibly rewarding.
From a Dream to a T-Shirt Bar
One of the things we love most about JK Performance is that we’re not just a traditional apparel business.
We’re creating an experience.
Pick your print.
Pick your shirt.
Press it.
Make it yours.
Our T-shirt bar allows customers to create something that fits their personality, their team, their school, their favorite sport, their favorite saying—or simply something they love.
And being at Made & Found gave us the opportunity to share that vision with so many people.
Every conversation, every shirt, every custom order, and every person who stopped by our booth reminded us why we started.
The Road Is Part of the Story
Looking back, I think about that drive to Scotts Bluff with Sammie.
Two friends talking about business.
Talking about ideas.
Talking about what we wanted our future to look like.
We couldn’t see everything that was ahead of us.
But we were willing to take the first step.
That’s the funny thing about dreams. You don’t always know exactly where they’re going to lead.
Sometimes you just have to start driving.
And sometimes the best business decisions begin with a conversation between two friends who are crazy enough to say, “Let’s try it.”
Don’t Wake the Dreamers
Standing at Made & Found Midwest Market, surrounded by other makers, creators, dreamers, and small businesses, I couldn’t help but think about how far we’ve come.
JK Performance started with an idea.
It grew through late nights, long drives, lots of T-shirts, plenty of learning, and a whole lot of faith in what we were building.
We’re still dreaming.
We’re still learning.
We’re still figuring things out.
But we’re also doing it.
So maybe that’s what “Don’t Wake the Dreamers” really means to us.
It means don’t stop dreaming just because the dream isn’t finished yet.
It means keep showing up.
Keep creating.
Keep taking the next step.
And when you find someone who believes in the dream with you, hold onto them.
Because sometimes the person sitting beside you on that long drive isn’t just your friend.
Sometimes they’re your business partner, your biggest cheerleader, and the person who helps turn a dream into something real.
Here’s to the road we’ve already traveled—and all the places JK Performance has yet to go.
Don’t wake the dreamers.
We’re just getting started.
