Milk is an important source of calcium, vitamin D, and protein, but after age 1, it should complement meals, not replace them.

Too much milk can fill little stomachs, making it harder for children to get the iron, fiber, healthy fats, and other nutrients they need from solid foods.

🚩 Signs your child may be drinking too much milk:

• They ask for milk instead of meals or snacks.
• They seem full after drinking milk and eat very little food.
• They have constipation.
• They’re becoming increasingly picky with solid foods.
• They drink from a bottle or sippy cup throughout the day.
• Your pediatrician mentions low iron or iron deficiency anemia.

How much milk is recommended?

🥛 12-24 months
Whole milk: About 16-24 ounces per day.
Children under age 2 need the extra fat to support brain growth and development unless your pediatrician recommends otherwise.

🥛 After age 2
Low-fat (1%) or fat-free (skim) milk is generally recommended, with a goal of about 16-20 ounces per day, assuming your child is growing well and eating a balanced diet.

What about 2% milk?

Some families use 2% milk, especially if a child needs a little more dietary fat or based on family preferences. The best choice depends on your child’s growth, medical history, and your pediatrician’s recommendations.

What about soy milk?

Unsweetened fortified soy milk is the closest nutritionally to cow’s milk and is an appropriate alternative for children who cannot drink dairy. Look for one fortified with calcium and vitamin D, and avoid sweetened versions when possible.

What about almond milk?

Almond milk is not nutritionally equivalent to cow’s milk. It contains much less protein and fewer calories, so it generally isn’t recommended as the primary milk for toddlers unless advised by your pediatrician or a dietitian. If your child drinks almond milk, pay close attention to getting enough protein, healthy fats, calcium, and vitamin D from other foods.

The goal isn’t to avoid milk, it’s to make sure milk doesn’t replace the variety of foods growing children need.

Save this for your next well-child visit if you’ve ever wondered, “Is my child drinking too muc
