During the Spain versus Austria World Cup match, cameras caught a tall, striking woman carrying the official match ball onto the pitch before kickoff. Within minutes social media filled up with the same question from people all over the world who had clearly not been paying attention to rugby.
Who is that?
The answer is Ilona Maher. And if you did not know that name before reading this sentence, that is genuinely useful information about how badly female athletes get covered in mainstream sports media, because this woman is not one of the most famous female rugby players in the world. She is one of the most famous rugby players in the world. No qualifier. No asterisk. Overall. Across all genders.
Maher is a rugby sevens player who became the most followed rugby player on any social media platform on earth. She won an Olympic bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Games with Team USA. She then signed with Bristol Bears in England's Premiership Women's Rugby and the demand to see her play was so intense that the club had to move her debut to a bigger stadium because the normal venue could not hold the crowd. She scored four tries in seven appearances for Bristol. She competed in the Women's Rugby World Cup. She has appeared on Dancing with the Stars. She has millions of followers across platforms. She runs a podcast. She is, by any reasonable measure, a genuine global sports celebrity.
And yet when she walked out at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles as an Adidas ambassador to carry the ball before a World Cup Round of 32 match, people who had been watching the biggest sporting event in the world for weeks were asking who she was.
This happens to female athletes constantly. The infrastructure of sports coverage, the highlights, the commentary, the social algorithms, the broadcast deals, all of it has historically allocated far less attention to women's sports even when individual athletes are operating at a level of fame and achievement that would guarantee household name status if they were men. Maher has overcome that infrastructure through a combination of elite performance, authentic social media presence, and the kind of personality that cameras love.
She is not becoming famous. She has been famous. The people asking "who is she?" at the World Cup are the last ones to find out something that rugby fans, TikTok users, and sports media professionals have known for years.
Spain beat Austria 3-0. Lamine Yamal's La Roja continues. And somewhere in the crowd at SoFi Stadium, Ilona Maher watched the game she helped open and let a few million more people catch up to what the rugby world already knew.
