That gap though! On lightweight rigs we like firm foams that are slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the tire carcass. The gap allows the tread of the tire to conform to the terrain for better traction and also provides sidewall support for off camber situations.

As a bonus, it also gives you that “aired down” look that 1:1 vehicles have when out on the trail.

Usually a smaller air gap is better. This photo portrays a slightly bigger gap than normal just for illustration purposes.
