A behind-the-design look at Vol. 458, a tribute to birding. Each pencil features a design inspired by four different North American birds, each built around the bird’s iconic colors.

Clark's Grebe Design - A yellow, orange, and black gradient that echoes the bird’s bill and black cap.

Mallard Design - A green, purple, blue gradient to showcase the male Mallard’s head, with red and orange drawn from its webbed feet.

Green Jay Design - A vibrant green, blue, and yellow gradient inspired by the Jay’s rare plumage.

Black Rail Design - A black, red, blue, and grey gradient drawn from the rail’s striking eye and plumage.

Introducing the Blackwing 458, the latest limited-edition Blackwing Volumes release paying tribute to birding, in collaboration with National Audubon Society.

Birding, or bird watching, is the observation, study, and cataloging of birds in their natural habitats. Even more than that, it’s an exercise in slowing down. In a world constantly vying for our attention, birding asks us to simply be present. It reminds us there is beauty all around us, waiting to be noticed.

Each balanced graphite Blackwing pencil features a gradient finish inspired by one of four North American birds: the Clark’s Grebe, Mallard, Green Jay, and Black Rail.

The model number 458, the estimated number of migratory bird species that regularly travel through the United States and Canada, is stamped on each pencil in black foil.

“Against the tyranny of constant pseudo-activity, sometimes the most radical thing is to do nothing at all.”

A look into the analog world of philosopher and creator Julian de Medeiros. From streaming live-stream lectures to filling pages with daily "manuscribbles," his process relies on tuning out the digital noise to think critically about our times. No shortcuts to true originality, just a notebook, paper, and a dedication to the cause.
