What a week at Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums 2026!

Congrats to our founder, Oh Tepmongkol-Wheaton, who just received the Distinguished Speaker recognition after a full day of hands-on workshops taking participants from artifact to virtual museum.

But the best part wasn’t the badge. It was seeing people bring their own artifacts, learn how to capture them in 3D, and start turning them into digital experiences they can take home and share.

A huge thank you to our co-presenters, Anthony Chow , John Macleod, John M. Wheaton of the Nez Perce Tribe, Manny Manny, Finn Henell, Glen Villa and Billy Villa of the Miwok Heritage Center and to everyone who trusted us with their artifacts. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Four days. A small crew. A scan station we drove 900 miles to Spokane. And a setup we tweaked more times than we can count.

That was our ATALM week.

We wanted people to get their hands on the tools and see what digitization could mean for the artifacts they care for. You can show a 3D model over Zoom. It’s different when someone stands beside the real object, helps capture it, and sees the result for themselves.

We discussed an important distinction: a virtual museum might place an artifact inside an imagined world. A digital museum brings the real artifact into the digital world, so people can look closer and engage with details they might miss in a gallery.

The room applauded. That made the long drive, late nights, and Wi-Fi battles worthwhile.

We also premiered our portable, patent-pending scan station. Seeing it work in the room made all the last-minute problem-solving feel real.

We’re grateful to everyone who helped make the week happen.

Preservation should not require an institutional budget. Start with one artifact. Learn from it. Then decide what comes next.
