ReMUJI Exhibition: Koi Continuum by Reiko Sudo & Adrien Gardère【New York】

Since 2010, MUJI has been implementing “ReMUJI,” a resource circulation initiative that goes beyond simply selling products. Through this program, MUJI collects clothing and other items from customers, adds new value through processes such as dyeing, cleaning, and sewing, and reintroduces them into circulation.

In this exhibition, we reuse clothing that has shared time with our customers as “raw materials” and express the concept of objects continuing to live on through long-term use through koinobori, or carp streamers, a traditional custom displayed every May in Japan.

The koinobori on display in this exhibition are based on the installation “Koi Current” created by Japanese textile designer Reiko Sudo and French designer Adrien Gardère. “Koi Current” has conveyed the creativity and potential of textiles to children by transcending conventional boundaries—such as clothing and space—and evolving into the free-form koinobori adorned with diverse colors and patterns. Through this exhibition, we aim to provide an opportunity to consider a new way of engaging with objects for the future, based on values distinct from those of efficiency and mass production.
