We had a busy weekend full of ArtPrize installations! Thanks to all the help from AJ, the art installer extraordinaire, we were able to hang original watercolor and gauche pantings from the children's book, The Acorn & The Oak, written by Rhonda Accardo and illustrated by ArtPrize artist Jessica Waterstradt. Jessica will be joining us in the store for book signings on the following dates:

~ Sunday, September 15th from 12pm to 2pm
~ Thursday, September 19th from 5pm to 7pm
~ Friday, September 20th from 4pm to 6pm

We can't wait for you to see these paintings! Continue reading Jessica's artist statement below.

Artist Statement

"This series of watercolor and gauche paintings comprise the children’s book, The Acorn & the Oak. Each illustration beckons to earlier years where exploring nature and its wonders was nothing short of majestic. Seeing through a child’s eyes, we can relearn how to find treasures in forgotten places. For those who know how to look, you might find yourself immersed in a story of love, legacy, and renewal."

We are truly blown away by our next ArtPrize artist, Carrie Ross, a ceramicist out of Detroit. Swipe through to see some of her amazing work! We will share a little peak of her ArtPrize piece tomorrow, so keep an eye out for that! 👀👠 Scroll down to read her artist statement and bio!

"I’m Carrie Ross, a ceramic artist based in the Detroit metro area of Michigan. My journey began in 1998 when I took a ceramic college class at Foothill College in California, where I first fell in love with ceramics. After completing the ceramic courses, life took me away from pottery for several years.

After moving to Michigan in 2003, it was not until 2019 when I reignited my passion for pottery. I was given the opportunity to take more advanced classes at the Cherry Hill Potters Guild. Through these classes, I was able to develop my skills even further and became a member of the guild in 2022. My artistic practice combines wheel throwing with hand building, driven by an ever-present desire to push my creative boundaries.

The studio is my playground and a place for self-expression. I’m committed to taking risks with new techniques and materials, believing that these challenges are essential for growth. I continually set goals to improve my skills in wheel throwing, hand building and slab building, while being a part of my community. Looking ahead, I dream of establishing my own studio where I can continue to explore the endless possibilities of ceramics. I desire to create my own place where I can continue to feed my soul with the freedom and joy that allows me to express my inner self."

Lost in the tranquility of this water lily pond. 🌺✨ The vibrant colors and peaceful atmosphere are simply mesmerizing.

Ruth Posthumus has been a part of the Periwinkle Fog family since the beginning, and we are thrilled to have her be a part of the Periwinkle Fog ArtPrize family as well. Ruth has entered these stunning lily pad oil paintings, and just as her artist statement says (scroll to read), they truly do give an overall impression of peace and tranquility. We can't wait for you to see in person VERY soon! Read Ruth's bio and artist statement below!

Bio/Statement

"My name is Ruth Posthumus, and I love the arts, especially drawing, watercolor journaling, and oil painting. The arts are an excellent way to document travels and other cultures. The simplest forms are dramatic. The arts fill my soul with meaning. The colors and the process keep memories of people and places alive. In my painting, I desire to bring hope and meaning. It is about love for people and places.

Before our travels to Normandy, we visited the Orangerie Museum in Paris. It was a most emotional experience. it takes your breath away especially when you know that the paintings are a monument to peace (at the end of WW I.) Wars have not ceased and my paintings are meant to invoke a silence of remembrance and hope. The color and the process of painting keep the memories alive. The beauty of nature is everywhere, and there is hope for all people in all times."

We are excited to share another one of our ArtPrize artists with you! Jeanie was a part of our ArtPrize family last year, and we are so glad she chose us her venue again this year! Read Jeanies bio below, and swipe to see her ArtPrize piece, "As I Am", in its beginning stage as well as the final piece.

Jeanie is a mosaic artist in Lansing, MI. She was introduced to the art of mosaics as a teenager and has continued to advance her skill and define her style.  As Jeanie has grown as an artist, her style has begun to shift from patterns to finding ways to express emotion through mosaics.  The focus on patterns in her early years has developed her use and understanding of Andemento, which can be seen in her current works. Mosaic vases and portraits have become her favorite projects over the past few years.

Travel, the outdoors, and human connection play a significant role in Jeanie's inspiration and motivation in the creation of mosaics. While her pieces do not always directly represent an experience, the moments found in relationships and exploration encourage the creative process.

A note on "As I Am", from Jeanie:

"As mentioned in the ArtPrize bio I spent a decent amount of time reworking this piece. This included removing a large portion of the background and starting over. It was interesting to watch the progression of this particular piece along with its underlying message. I included one in progress picture to show the difference from the original to the end result."

ArtPrize is only 30 days away, and we are so excited to start sharing who our amazing artists are! Starting us off is painter Erin Mullis. Read her bio and artist statement below!

Erin Mullis is an abstract artist from Holland, Michigan, who began painting in 2020. Through abstract expressionism, she has found solace and purpose, using the process of layering mixed media and paint on canvas to navigate her emotions and experiences.Years after studying art at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Erin returned to painting at 42 years old, inspired by the introspective time during the pandemic shutdowns. Her work embodies resilience and hope, serving as a reminder that beauty can emerge from darkness. As Erin continues to evolve, she is dedicated to pushing creative boundaries and sharing her message of healing through art and its transformative power. For many years, she felt emotionally adrift, but art has guided her back to the person she was always meant to be. This newfound energy resonates in her work, and with each piece, her voice grows stronger. Her work is vibrant and expressive and often mimics patterns found in nature. Erin hopes that viewers connect with that same inner light and find solace in the journey through an intimate artistic language.

Stop by the store during ArtPrize to see Erin's entry! ArtPrize runs from September 13th through the 28th!
