When I tried to license it, large companies told me although HairZing was ingenious, โwomen would never be able to understand this hair accessory.โ I knew that was wrong, what woman would not welcome a hair tool that genuinely solved so many problems? Sure enough, we put HairZing on QVC and it was immediately popular, selling just under a couple million dollars the first year. During that time, it was seen by a large infomercial company and they quickly released a stretchable double hair comb accessory that looked so similar to mine, my own mother couldn't tell the difference. However, they couldn't duplicate the quality we handcrafted into every HairZing and confusion began because of their poor quality and high breakage rate. We tried to fight back as most small companies would and we were hauled into court claiming we were slandering their company. To finance the lawsuit and defend my product (which was still in patent pending) we liquidated 25 years of life savings, including everything in our retirement account, and re-mortgaged the house. Patent number 7,748,390 - is my favorite patent of all time because this is the one that changed the course of my life. We've gone from being deeply in debt and nearly bankrupt to now selling well over five million units. None of that would have been possible without the patent and the sheer determination it took to keep going no matter what happened. Like every woman reading this knows, life isn't fair. I wish it were, but it isn't. What happened to us was crushing, and it devastated the company and me personally. It took the last few years working 80 hour weeks, feeling beaten and stupid, and healing slowly to get my feet under me and re-build.
