Fall is almost here and it’s time to SEW! The holidays will be here before you know it! If you would like to learn how to sew your own decorations then you need a sewing class. Our Introduction to Beginning Sewing Skills class will be starting again on September 15 at 6-8:30 pm at BCCC. This mini course is meant to teach those who have never sewed or haven’t sewn since their school days to become familiar with using a sewing machine. If you have already had this class and want to continue your sewing journey then we are offering a Sewing Project class. This mini course is meant to help you to continue learning sewing basics while you make your own projects. We do have sewing machines available for class room work only. The best way is to bring your own machine and learn how to use it so you can use it at home. Enrollment is open now on the BCCC website or by stopping in to building 8, the continuing education building and register in person.

Today we finished up kids Sewing Camp. This week I had 5 girls 10-13. None of them had ever used a sewing machine or an iron. But they learn how to use both this week. They each up-cycled a feed bag to a reusable tote bag, hand sewed an owl pin cushion, and then were able to make 2 throw pillows for their beds on the machine . They learn how to preshrink and iron the fabrics they picked out. Then measure it and based on the size of their pillows, cut out and sew together the pillow covers. They all did so good! So proud of each of them!

The first session of Summer Sewing Camp at BCCC is now in the books and a success! I had 5 kids aged 8-14, 4 girls and one boy. I also had an intern to help me. They were all able to complete the 3 learning/beginning projects I had for them. First they learn about recycling/upcycling by making a tote bag from animal feed bags and how to use a sewing machine. ( Thank you to all those who gave me the feed bags for this project). They picked out their animal and now have a reusable bag for what ever they want to use it for. Second project was learning to hand sew. They cut out the pieces and put an adorable owl pin cushion together. This project taught them how to cut out a pattern piece, how to thread a needle , how to use a needle threader, how to do a running stitch and how to sew buttons on. Their last project was a pillow cover. They all picked out their own fabric at Walmart and had to get it ready to use by preshrinking and ironing their fabric at home with the help of their parents. Then they had to do a small math problem to figure out how much fabric they needed to make the piece of fabric for the envelope back cover. They also had to learn how to iron the fabric as part of the construction. I am so proud of each one of them! Their very first sewing projects are all great. Not perfect but as I told them, perfection only comes with practice. Here’s to planting the seeds in the next generations!
