Dress for the clock, not the current thermometer.

It's your first Saturday tripleheader. You're at the trunk at 6am, sun's not yet out, and you grab the long sleeve because right now that feels right.

Here's the part nobody tells a first-year official.

Game one kicks at 8am. Game three doesn't finish until the sun's blazing and the wind dies down.

The weather you dressed for at 7am is not the weather you're officiating in at 4pm.

So pack for both ends of the day, not the morning you walked out into.

Long sleeve for the chilly first game.
Short sleeve for the warm third one, same dye-sublimated American flag sitting flat on the left chest, so you look like the same official for all the games.

Baseline and top of the key. Two zones, zero overlap.

Two-person crew, half-court set. Here's the split that keeps you from stepping on each other.

Lead owns the baseline. You live under the basket and work the paint from the endline.

Trail holds above the top of the key. Everything out front, the perimeter, the shot, the backcourt.

When you both drift to the same drive, two sets of eyes land on one body and the whole weak side goes dark. That's where the ugly stuff happens.

Know your zone before the ball moves. Trust your partner to own theirs.

A pocket whistle isn't a backup.

You're sorting your bag for the weekend, and there it is, the spare, loose in a side pocket where it's lived all season.

Here's the problem. When your main one fails mid-play, you've got about three seconds before the game needs that call.

Three seconds is not enough time to unzip, dig, and find a whistle at the bottom of a pocket.

A breakaway lanyard fixes that. The spare rides on your chest, where your hand already goes without thinking. No digging. No dead air. The call lands when it needs to.

The backup only counts if you can reach it in one move.

Players and fans show up expecting the field, rink, or court to work without a hitch. Officials know better. A snapped zip tie on a goal pipe, a dead horn at the table, or a worn piece of equipment will always expose itself at the highest-leverage moment of the game.
