The Onyx Club was created from one girl's longtime love of fashion and history. Throughout my childhood, my mother and I always shopped at flea markets and thrift stores because they were affordable. I have always loved wearing unique pieces and I never really was interested in following trends. As a young girl, I watched black-and-white films from the 1940s and 1950s with my grandmother. I became
fascinated by women like Marilyn Monroe and Bette Davis, but starlets of color, like Lena Horne and Fredi Washington, made a huge impression on me. They were delicate and ladylike - AND strong and successful, despite the way they were overlooked in Hollywood because of their skin color. I had never seen women so beautiful. As a teenager, I started finding vintage treasures from the eras I had grown to love, and that was when I first started wearing vintage. I styled myself in a 1930s beaded dress for my high school prom. In college, I bought and sold vintage out of my dorm room, which quickly became overcrowded. I eventually had to stop selling for lack of storage space, much to the relief of my roommate, I'm sure. During the time I wasn't selling vintage, I became even more infatuated with it, and constantly researched fabrics, construction and repairing, and dating techniques. After building up my knowledge of vintage, I decided to open up a brand new shop - The Onyx Club - named after a slinky jazz club which existed in New York City in the 1920s and 1930s. My passion and enthusiasm for vintage is truly authentic - I still get butterflies in my stomach whenever I find a beautiful old item. The pieces I find are classics and will never go out of style.
