TRAIL UPDATE--- The inspections of the Vilas County trail system should be completed this weekend. On Monday, the Parks and Recreation Administrator will contact all 11 clubs for the conditions in their area. Stay tuned for the official opening of the Vilas County Trails.
Right now we have about 4 inches on the ground with more in the forecast, but we also need it to freeze. As of today the lakes are not frozen, but ice is beginning to form.
We will update as soon as we have the official time and date of the trail opening!

Our friends to the far north are getting the good stuff. Safe travels to anyone headed that way.

Moderate to heavy lake effect snow and some blowing snow today, then lake effect snow continuing into early Saturday. Use caution if traveling in the snow belts today.

A nice hard freeze would help first.

MAJOR Winter Storm prospects increasing for the middle of next week? This is the 12z GFS model that forecasts a whopper of a BLIZZARD over the central Plains with a wide swath of 12-24 inches over a large section of Nebraska Wisconsin and Minnesota and even 24-40 inches of snow over central and northeastern Iowa. Do I think someone will get 40 inches? Unlikely. Do I think that this is the final track set in stone? Not a chance. But what I do know is a major storm system is looking even more possible from the central Plains to the northern Ohio Valley and Great Lakes some time mid to late next week. And whats to follow by looking at the ensembles is arctic air could flood in after the storm system moves through. Stay tuned!

Let's hope! We got some braaaapin' to do.

Just for fun - here is the european computer models snow accumulation map just past Christmas. The NAO will be tanking soon and the AO will be dropping off a cliff as we get closer to December. Don't focus on the details please, but this is just another good sign that a lot of snow birds will be happy and the boring weather pattern will soon be gone as we enter into December.

NOAA scientists declared the arrival of La Nina today, calling it present, but weak. It is predicted to be short-lived, possibly only lasting a few months. The climate phenomena will likely contribute to drier and warmer weather in the southern U.S. and wetter, cooler conditions in the Pacific Northwest and across to the northern tier of the nation this winter.
