I just love picture books! One we read a lot is about a little triangle who feels different. She didn’t roll like the circles or stack like the squares… so she went looking for shapes just like her.

And somehow that simple story turned into a really sweet talk.

About fitting in.
About friendship.
About how being different isn’t a bad thing.

How we actually do more together because we’re different.
How everyone brings something unique to the table.

That’s what I love about picture books.
They give kids a safe place to process big feelings. It’s easier to talk about “her” than to talk about “me.”

And years ago we even turned that one into a little shape activity with counting, shapes, fine motor, lots of giggles. Win-win. 🥹

Do you have any books that have sparked conversations like that at your house? We always love adding new favorites. 📚✨

Tip Tuesday! Literacy doesn’t always look like sitting still with a book 📚✨

This morning looked like Busy Town spread across the floor, little cars driving around, and my son narrating everything that was happening 🚗🗺️

And guess what? That’s literacy through play.

✔️ New vocabulary (roads, signs, places, directions)

✔️ Storytelling & sequencing

✔️ Problem-solving and imagination

✔️ Fine motor skills- you can build the road any way you want!

✔️ Confidence leading his own play

Play is one of the most powerful ways kids build early reading and language skills, especially when it’s hands-on, open-ended, and fun. 🩵

Busy Town is one of those activities that keeps them engaged and learning without even realizing it (my favorite kind 😉).

If you’re looking for screen-free ways to build literacy through play, this one is a win.

What are some of your kid’s favorite ways to play?
