Hey All! We're transitioning over to the Dark and Wilder Group Page and wrapping up this brand page shortly. The group page can be found by searching "Dark and Wilder - The feel Good Group for Animal Lovers"

We'd like to give thanks, appreciation and recognition for all the on going support from family and friends alike in all stages of the work we've put in.

The group page will be focused on highlighting the great work of organizations, people and positive wild animal news and stories and just how incredible every animal is when you get right down to it.

By focusing on the positive outcomes of the collective work and dedication of others, we hope to add a little bright spot in your day and hopefully inspire and renew you're own call to action for the preservation of wild animals and the eco systems that they live in, in whatever form that means to you!

See you there!
Dark and Wilder

Update:

With all the generous donations, volunteer work, sponsorships and fundraising efforts, we have been moving forward!

Many volunteer hours have gone into clearing the property of falling apart structures and building new enclosures.

Many foster caregivers have allowed us to take in dozens of animals while we work on the property.

Many more volunteer hours have gone into fundraising and caring for the few on-site animals.

Support from Animate Coffee ensured we could vaccinate all of the raccoon orphans in foster care.

Thank you all for your help! We can continue to help wildlife as long as we do it with the support of our community!

Some difficult news to share...

I think every new-ish wildlife rehab centre struggles each year with whether or not they have the capacity to open for wildlife orphan season.

At CCWR, we are entirely volunteer run. That includes me, Lynne, as I juggle a full-time job to pay my bills with managing the rehab centre. Still, the team of generous, dedicated volunteers and I generally manage to take in about 100 wild animals in need each year, caring for them with about $6000 of donated funds from our lovely supporters.

As a volunteer, I receive both lots of grateful messages from the public but probably an equal number of mean messages. I do understand this is out of frustration that our region really doesn't have the resources to care for all wildlife injuries. As a volunteer-run centre with limited resources, we have to be very aware of our limitations. There are wildlife cases for which we are not able to help.

I feel awful enough saying 'no' in these cases. It breaks my heart that I cannot do more. It makes it really painful when the caller threatens to withdraw support, leaves a bad review, or shames me.

CCWR might not open this season at all. Our rehab trailer is in bad shape and really isn't a healthy environment for either the volunteers or the wildlife we admit. We are trying to figure out a way to take in some animals, but at the moment we are not in a position to help.

We'll keep you posted. Thank you for your kind thoughts.

Lynne

We've noted a few ground nests behind wood piles, winter seeds being eaten, tracks in the snow and "missing" dog fur caches that we left for visitors. All good signs there life in our yard :)

Little things, like leaving brush piles and unraked leaves, can provide shelter to animals in a harsh season.

Millions of people have been inspired by a video of a cub climbing a snowy slope to reach his mother, but the drone taking the footage put the bears in danger.

Hats off and large round of applause to the Southern Environmental Law Center, Conservation groups and individuals that faught for this ✌

Quoted from the article link below:

""Rolling back protections is the opposite of what this species needs," Red Wolf Coalition Executive Director Kim Wheeler said in the SELC press release. "The court's ruling today makes clear that the USFWS must recommit to red wolf recovery and resume its previously successful management policies and actions."

It is also wildly unpopular. Of the 108,124 comments FWS received on the proposal, 99.9 percent of them opposed it. And of the 19 comments that supported restricting the wolves' territory, 13 came from just one real estate developer.""

Just goes to show wolves are wanted

A seriously moving article as the author describes the strategic de-horning of this rhino's horn for it's own protection. At up to a 90% success rate as an anti-poaching measure, it may be the best chance of survival for this fella and many more.

This revolutionary scheme may seem cruel, but is aimed at deterring poachers – and saving animals’ lives

The idea of a person turning into a wolf may have started all the way back in Ancient Greece where it was believed that Apollo Lycaeus could take shape of any creature. This created the belief of wearing a wolf pelt could also cause a person to change into that animal. Maybe on this Halloween we will see things that we do not usually see, and create more stories to follow. But let’s shed a better light for our wolves by creating a happy ending for them.. 🎃🐺

The challenges facing wolf packs around the globe are numerous, complex and vary by species and even region.
This week during Wolf Awareness Week, one of the challenges we can eliminate together is many of the misrepresentations of wolves as being a lone hunter, teeth-bearing predator or even a supernatural mystic creature. Humans sometimes attach and project these images onto wolves which can reinforce their misunderstood nature. These are very powerful images and symbolisms but wolves truly deserve much better than this.
Dark and Wilder wolf t-shirts only use images of wolves that do not show any aggressive, defensive, predatory or hostile images or wording. We chose to refocus our wolf t-shirt designs on the simple and natural beauty of this iconic and integral predator.
Because we print all our t-shirt ourselves, we're able to donate 10% of each wolf shirt purchase to the Endangered Wolf Center for their direct efforts to keeping wild wolf and canide populations genetically diverse and free!

Minnesota and Ontario wolves may be getting a new home on the Isle Royale (Lake Superior area) to help that wolf population survive and grow. Much better option than a wolf and/or moose cull. 👏🐺

Researchers plan to relocate mainland wolves to an island in Lake Superior in an effort to boost the near-extinct predator population and limit the growth of local moose herds.

Primarily an herbivore, the name panda is said to come from the Nepali word ‘ponya,’ which means bamboo or plant eating animal.
Almost 50 percent of the red panda’s habitat is in the Eastern Himalayas. The loss of nesting trees and bamboo is causing a decline in red panda populations across much of their range because their forest home is being cleared.
The red panda has been classified as endangered by the IUCN, because its wild population is estimated at less than 10,000 mature individuals and continues to decline.
Please check out to see how you can help Red Pandas and keep them healthy in the wild! .
