I still remember the moment when I first came to the realization that the University of Wisconsin-Madison did not have its own student-run style magazine. I asked myself, “How could it not?” How could such a progressive, highly regarded university not have a publication dedicated to the art of style? The other interns with whom I worked were somehow affiliated with their respective universities’ f
ashion magazines. One intern in particular encouraged me to found one at Wisconsin. I contacted two friends at UW-Madison who I knew would help build the ideal team, and we were off and running. We spent countless hours exploring exactly what style means to each of us. Style is what separates you from the other guy. It is inclusive, and only dynamic to the extent that you wish. Sure, it is defined by the outfit you put on in the morning, the shoes you walk in, and the bag you carry; but also by your daily workout routine, the sugar in your coffee, the way you lace your Converse, your go-to lunch spot, and the drinks you mix on Friday night. This is MODA: fashion, nightlife, dining, and lifestyle. They are four major aspects of your style that sometimes get neglected in the haze of daily college life. “I have no money to spend on great clothes.” “I have no time to decorate my apartment.” “There are no good bars past State Street.” These are not-so-fine whines that our staff is working to prove wrong. MODA was brought to the UW-Madison campus to open students’ eyes and show them what the capital of Wisconsin and the number-one college town are really about. We have since established the most diversely talented and creative staff one could ever ask for. Each writer has translated his or her unique personality into text, and they cannot wait to share their ideas with all of you. Our dedicated publicity staff has helped us to coordinate all of the loose ends of our launch event and spread the word about Madison’s newest student-run style magazine. Frankly, I’m pretty thrilled about everything we have accomplished so far. We’ve spent late nights and early mornings pouring great amounts of creativity into one website, and now that the launch has arrived, the result of our hard work is coming to fruition.
