In a volatile world, it’s a privilege to be able to fill life with moments of craft, culture, collaboration, creativity, community, celebration, care. These are some of my words for 2023. I am so grateful to have had these memories. However the most significant insights I had in 2023 were probably into myself. Self-awareness through breathwork, yoga, gratitude practice is the gift I recieved from wonderful teachers last year. This is the light I carry into 2024. Wishing everyone peace and joy as the year winds down❤️ Thank you for your continued support.
When you know what brings joy and meaning to your life and you just work at making that reality happen, the universe presents opportunities that you may never have thought of. I was developing my Re/Love campaign several weeks back and shortly thereafter was selected to be part of a fashion exhibition at a prestigious climate action event! Re/Love is going to the event being held in Singapore next week - a gathering of climate action innovators, world leaders in policy, business, culture, entertainment. So excited! Thank you for the opportunity!
Hello November, what do you have in store for us? To recharge, feel repaired and restored, adopt a gentler pace of life , seems like a dream in these troubled times. How does one build resilience in a world that seems out of control ? Where do you find meaning ? Stepping into this month with gratitude for what one has and a prayer for those who have little to hold on to.
Models Tina Tin and Isabella are wearing handloom separates with Re/Loved jackets. Photographed by Jyot Bhalla.
Viewpoint: Where Do You Stand? There will always be different perspectives, different beliefs, different contexts. That's what makes each of us unique. But without mutual respect, shared values, a sense of community, a desire for peace, care and consideration - we will never be able to work on new solutions that are beneficial to many, and not just some. There is so much darkness and despair in the world, that it's hard to keep showing up on this grid, without sounding hollow at times. But, perhaps a little light, a reflective thought may change a mind somewhere - - the ability to fix, to mend, to work things out - this lens of love and re/love, could it change where we stand?
Catch the next wave, if you haven't yet.. Upcycling is in and we're making it easy for you! This striking jacket with zig-zag waves in blues, yellows and pinks on a black base has been developed using old fabrics, applique and kantha stitching methods. Careful mending and patching makes this a unique piece that can be styled with many outfits. Seen here with our best selling flared black Phenom Pants and our itsy-bitsy Twyla bralette. See yourself in one of our RE/LOVE jackets yet?

Black but never boring! This upcycled black jacket with beige motifs, made from vintage saris, has a running border at the front with small floral motifs scattered. A double-sided piece for those who love a pop of orange. Styled here with our Amrita mustard shirt-dress and those yellow boots! A for Attitude I say!

Teal Me More about this beauty! A double-sided patchwork jacket that has been developed using old printed fabrics, applique and kantha stitching methods for our Re/Love collection.
What I love about this jacket is the combination of fabrics on each side. One side has a off-white base with floral motifs in brown and turquoise. Floral applique embroideries have been used as a means to mend and cover small fabric imperfections. The other side is a woven plaid base in shades of blue and aqua with a check pattern. Folding the sleeves allow contrast details to come through when either side is worn.
This is a unique piece that can be styled with many outfits. We've styled it with our Eileen Mandarin Collar Midi Dress in rich teal linen, with burgundy boots. A lovely piece to keep for your travels to cooler places.
There is a lot of effort that has gone into making these textiles fresh again, creating wearable pieces that are timeless and work with many items in a wardrobe. This entire endeavour is all about helping people seeing the consumption of fashion differently, how with a bit of creativity and using mending techniques, we can make things go much much further. Personally, for me, this effort is gratifying on another level as well, as a job-creation mechanism for women who work from or near their homes in India. I am sure this is the case in many other countries. Imagine the possibilities of creating work while reducing fashion waste. A win-win, for people and the planet!
Vest Assured, this is an easy pairing. Our Leela Swing Dress in handloom Jamdani with a vest jacket made of vintage textiles with running kantha stitching. Kantha stitching been done by communities of women in Bengal where these vintage printed textiles have been salvaged . Further mending, embroideries , hand appliquéing and finishing helps with highlighting and renewing the fabric. Yes, it takea a lot of effort to renew something and make it feel fresh and attractive again. It takes effort in not sending these mateials to land fills. But it’s so worth it. Because once you can recreate , renew, relove, things just seem a bit better than before. It’s a small shift in mindset, but imagine if this was amplified millions of times. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but maybe an upcycled vest can get you thinking . And if you think you don’t know how to wear it. Think again, all you need is a bit of creative styling.

And after Kebaya ReImagined, I am shifting focus to something different. Welcome to RE/LOVE with Ayesha.
RE/LOVE is all about rediscovering the joy that lies within. It's about re-looking at what we have in our lives, mending, repairing and highlighting details that making something feel renewed with energy, made beautiful again, making us love what we already have. Learning how to RE/LOVE again.
Re/Love is about caring for ourselves, our communities, our planet. It's about reducing waste, repurposing existing items, being grateful, being patient, being contented.
RE/LOVE is all about pairings. Pairings of our favourite styles with up-cycled, repaired jackets made of vintage textiles and hand detailed embroideries. One-of-a kind jackets that are keepsakes, conversation starters, that you can wear with anything in your wardrobe. I am going to show you how.
Stay tuned!
Kebaya ReImagined - Part 2-Details, Craft, Credit
I couldn't have brought my Kebaya ReImagined concept to life without the incredible expertise of my network of craft artisans, master tailor and production partner. The details of my creation is a result of their talent. This is an appreciation post, shining a light on hundreds of hours of work that has gone behind in the weaving of heritage fabrics, creation of blocks, hand blockprinting, hand textturing, embroideries, stitching, quality control, management of the entire process, giving credit where credit is due - behind the scenes to my craft and production partners. Thank you for the incredible support and work that you have all done, with very short lead times. Too often, the real hands that create a beautiful piece of work in the fashion industry get no credit. My participation in the Kebaya ReImagined project was to also reimagine the way credit is given to everyone in the production process in the fashion world. Now wouldn't that be something? What is the point of all this fashion and beauty if we don't shine a light on the talents of the people who are creating the magic. Too often, designers and producers in the fashion industry, don't want to share the names of the sources and vendor partners. Yes, there is a fear of copycats, intellectual creative rights being infringed. But I have always believed that when you approach a relationship with transparency and mutual respect and maintain that with consistency, there will always be an abundance of opportunities for everyone to share in. So much gratitude and pride for the wonderfully diverse and inclusive world of craft that I have been immersed in.
Kebaya Re-Imagined - Part 1
Sharing a bit about the creative process, the concept, moodboard, initial sketches. Here is the concept note behind my creation -
STORIES FORGOTTEN AND FAMILIAR
Cultural heritage, evolving through time, passed through generations is a collection of stories forgotten and familiar. The familiar gives us form and structure to build identities and understanding, embodies shifting power structures and technologies. The forgotten stories give us the context of where we come from, a remembrance of different times, a connection to communities past.
The idea for Kebaya Re-Imagined is to incorporate such stories for contemporary everyday wear, beyond special occasions, to translate cultural heritage to living heritage.
Use of Indian Heritage crafts in collaboration with master artisans is central to brand Ayesha’s DNA. The fabrics of handloom Chanderi [cotton-silk] and Kota Doria [fine cotton] in ivory and white will be used with gold blockprinting and embroideries. The pintuck detailing is inspired by Peranakan shophouse windows, a nod to the “stories familiar” that surround us in Singapore and in other parts of SE Asia, giving us a sense of visible structure and identity. The choice of white and ivory is a reference to Indonesia educator and activist Raden Adjeng Kartini wearing white kebayas during the 19th century, a symbol of emancipation of women for that time. The choice of gold and floral motifs is based on interviews with friends in Singapore who shared the preference for “gold” for special occasions and festivities with family. Hand block printing and embroideries in gold are again done in collaboration with Indian master crafts artisans.
Stories Forgottten and Familiar: This October we are re-visiting a core brand premise, that was established in 2014, when the cashmere line debuted. At that time, all our print concepts were inspired by "Stories Forgotten and Familiar". Who would have thought that 9 years later, that tagline remains as strong and even more meaningful, because now it extends to the fabrics we get loomed, the craft communities we interact with, the way we design our silhouettes, always classic and timeless, the projects and collaborations we undertake. So stay tuned this October, as we showcase our on-going, evolving perspective on Stories Forgotten and Familiar.
Is it October already? The last quarter of 2023, a 9th birthday anniversary for brand Ayesha, a lead-up to festivities, travel and holidays, fall colours, scarf fashion and plenty of layers, a time for reflections and celebrations, a dash to get things done before 2024 arrives. The magic of October has arrived!
Midweek gratitude a beautiful morning. When the streaming light makes you stop in your tracks and you take a deep happy sigh! Have a lovely day!
Talking about my work with a lens on “Craft, Culture and Community” , discussing the relevance of craft in society today , what makes something culturally significant , how can communities be set up for success and opportunities and why sustainable production begins at the grassroots with sustainable livelihood opportunities in semi-urban and rural areas, best equipped to use local and natural resources and keep evolving with time . Some great questions from the fashion design and marketing students at sg
Thanks for inviting me !
It's always summer somewhere! Our most loved styles are classic silhouettes that work all year long. Choose from the Pandora, the Amrita, the Twyla and our Colette Co-ord Sets. Soft handwoven fabrics with a beautiful feel and flow, rich colours and bold patterns, when you get an Ayesha outfit, you can count on quality, comfort and style!
Back To Work Mode. The holidays are done and dusted, and work has begun in full swing. And a has been on my mind!
Introducing The Leela, flowy shirt dress that can be styled in many ways. The current batch has been developed in buttery soft handloom Jamdani with simple embroidery detailing. Available in 3 colours : cobalt blue, sunshine yellow, classic cream. Gorgeously soft fabric that breathes easy in our tropic climate, a relaxed fit that loves all body types, simple yet smart with elegant detailing. I styled it in 3 ways, as a dress, with straight pants and flouncy ones too. A swing dress that works hard too! Now that’s my kind of Leela!
Love love these holiday pics of scarves shared by my close friend and longtime brand supporter , during her recent trip to London. Over the years, Divya has purchased several of my scarves for herself and family and friends. She says "This is my favourite present to give. And to see it loved and used even after so many years !"
This is just so heartwarming for me hear and on so many levels - first, on a functional level, the use of quality materials and finishing as stood the test of time, and on an emotional level, these creations continue to be regarded as an expression of love and affection as well. As a creator of products, it's this kind of feedback that validates the two pillars of my brand offering - quality and love.
Adding a pic I found from my first sample viewing and focus group discussion in Jan 2014, when I was contemplating whether to begin this business or not! Divya was there with me, right at the very beginning. Thank you D! You've walked this road with me all the way too and I am so much stronger for it!
Way to go ! Here’s to young change makers using their voices to raise issues around fashion, culture and sustainability ! Wearing one of our popular tie-up shirts in woven ikat developed by award winning , multi-generational master artisan Gajam Yadagiri of Telangana during her trip, I just loved Indira’s enthusiasm for showcasing Indian heritage crafts at a global event.
Read more about this go-getter here :
Indira is a fresh fashion and textile design graduate from the LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore passionate about environmental and cultural sustainability. Last week, she had the opportunity to participate at the Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark. It’s a prestigious event that brings together brands, policy makers and advocates in the field of fashion sustainability too. As a member of the Next Gen Assembly, she spoke about decolonizing design, working with indigenous craft communities and the impact of the West driven unsustainable system of fashion production. Indira was one among 8 young professionals selected from 170 applicants from around the globe for this advocacy programme organised by the Global Fashion Agenda and the Centre for Sustainable Fashion.
When you take the time to design and make things, with the knowledge of the type of materials, how they are made, who makes them, how many people and processes are involved in their making, you can't but help feel deeply connected to each item that is produced. These are the images of production in process that my craft and maker partner send me - weavers, dyers, printers, block printers, embroiderers, tailors. This is my world of craft, culture and community. If you are reading this, then thank you for being part of my world!
If the things in our life could sit back and talk about their lives , would they say they were well made, came from a place of love, were handled well and felt easy and comfortable ? That they continued to be cherished for long and held dear. How would it feel to sit in on that conversation , if they were your things ?
Ujjwala looking trés chic with an scarf! If you are out and about in an Ayesha do send me some pics. Would love to see what everyone is upto this summer! Happy holidays xo
