"Softer than cotton" is a classic phrase, but here is a textile paradox: in its most primary form, woven cotton is actually rough to touch.

It takes engineering on the loom to unlock softness. Welcome to Part 1 of our cotton masterclass.

🪵 1. The Primary Weave (Pure Cotton): Without density, threads sit far apart. These open gaps create a coarse, rustic texture that feels surprisingly rough and uneven.

🧵 2. Everyday Soft Cotton (The Foundation): Smoothness requires density. Packing a higher thread count tightly together closes those rough gaps, creating a sturdy, dependable canvas.

🌸 3. Mal Cotton (The Cloud): The Malmal co-ord set I’m wearing uses a similar thread count but a completely different, looser weaving technique. It strips away stiffness, leaving a weightless fluidity that drapes like water.

Primary cotton gives texture; everyday cotton gives structure; Malmal gives a cloud.

Sunday Notes by Neelam | Episode 09: The Medium of Expression

As we have established in our previous notes, Chikankari is an intricate language expressed through the human hand—very much like a beautiful, unique handwriting.

But for handwriting to be legible, it requires the right medium. Why does this craft thrive on fine georgettes, rayons, and specific cottons, but completely fail on denim, linen, chiffon, or certain pure silks?

Because authentic hand-embroidery is a game of precise structural tension:

▪️ The Rigid Textiles (Denim & Linen): These materials are far too stubborn. An artisan’s fine needle breaks against the dense weave, completely distorting the delicate shadow work (Bakhiya).

▪️ The Fragile Textiles (Chiffon & Flimsy Silks): These lack the necessary tensile strength. The intense, concentrated pull of thousands of tight hand-stitches causes the warp and weft to pucker, sag, or tear entirely.

True Chikankari demands a balanced canvas—a fabric that allows the needle to pass seamlessly while supporting weeks of meticulous hand-craftsmanship.

In our next episode, we will dive deep into the absolute baseline of this craft: the different levels of cotton, and why standard commercial cotton just doesn't suffice.

Came to Lucknow for chikankari sourcing.

Ended up also sourcing:
• kebabs
• chai
• random old lanes
• 14 unnecessary food stops
• and an emotional attachment to this city

Somewhere between fabric stacks, trials, overflowing shopping bags and “bas ek aur shop dekhte hain”…

Lucknow started becoming part of the journey too.

Diving deeper into Lucknowi threads ✨

Before a chikankari piece reaches us, it passes through many hands.

Fabric procurement, cutting, block printing, embroidery, washing, finishing… and often, different artisans working on different stages of the same piece.

One of the manufacturers in Lucknow told me that even a regular chikankari kurti can take around 15 days to complete.

And suddenly, you stop looking at these pieces as just “kurtis.”

You begin seeing the time, process, and human effort woven into them.
