Did you know your child’s ability to write actually starts with strong shoulders?

It might sound strange, but it’s true! Kids develop from top to bottom (called cephalocaudal) and from the inside out (proximodistal). So, before their little fingers are ready to hold a pencil, their bodies need to build strength in the core, shoulders, elbows, and wrists.

Those pivotal joints - shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingers, all play a part in getting ready for writing. The shoulder, especially, is key to steady arm movement and control.

When a child is using a whole-arm motion to draw or scribble, it's a sign that their shoulders are doing most of the work, not their fingers. This means they’re still developing those early motor skills, and that’s perfectly normal!

👉 Forcing a "correct grip" too soon or teaching letters before they’re ready won’t help and can cause frustration. Instead, we need to focus on movement and play that builds strength and confidence in the whole body.

Play builds strong bodies, which leads to confident little writers, in their own time.
