Patagonia is taking the Trump administration back to court over Bears Ears.

On September 2, the outdoor company joined Tribal, conservation, archaeology and recreation groups in a lawsuit challenging Trump’s July proclamation shrinking Bears Ears National Monument by about 91%.

The monument had covered roughly 1.36 million acres. Trump’s order removes about 1.24 million acres from the monument and leaves roughly 121,000 acres protected under the designation. The excluded lands are scheduled to reopen to uses including mineral and geothermal leasing and mining, subject to other applicable laws.

The administration says it is “rightsizing” the monument to protect specific historic and scientific resources while allowing broader use of the surrounding federal land. It also cited domestic resource development and national security in justifying the change.

Patagonia and its co-plaintiffs argue the move is illegal. Their central claim is that the Antiquities Act gives presidents authority to create national monuments, but not to eliminate or dramatically shrink monuments created by previous presidents.

This is familiar territory for Patagonia. The company also sued Trump in 2017, when his first administration cut Bears Ears by about 85%. President Biden later restored the monument’s larger boundaries in 2021.

Conservation groups used the moment to raise awareness about the illegal wildlife trade threatening pangolins across Asia and Africa.

Pangolins are the world’s most trafficked mammals, making every birth incredibly important. 🌍✨

Conservationists celebrated the birth of a rare baby pangolin, an animal many people around the world have never encountered despite its critical role in ecosystems. Pangolins are small, scale-covered mammals known for feeding on ants and termites, but sadly they are also among the most illegally trafficked animals on Earth.

Wildlife experts say illegal poaching for scales and meat has severely threatened pangolin populations across Asia and Africa. Because of this, successful births in protected environments are often viewed as hopeful signs for future conservation efforts.

Photos of the newborn quickly spread online, with many viewers amazed by the animal’s unique appearance and gentle behavior. Conservation groups hope viral attention will increase awareness about wildlife trafficking and the urgent need to protect endangered species before they disappear forever.

A key identifying feature of a green sea turtle hatchling is the presence of 5 vertebral scutes running down the center of the shell. They also have 4 pairs of costal scutes. Green sea turtle hatchlings also have exactly one pair (2 scales) of prefrontal scales. They are typically black or very dark brown, often appearing almost charcoal and feature prominent white or pale yellow margins (edges) on their shell and flippers. This "countershading" helps camouflage them in the open ocean.

Follow and subscribe if you love the ocean. The last of their kind are still swimming, waiting for us to care. 🌊🖤
The vaquita is a tiny porpoise found only in Mexico’s Gulf of California. Hidden beneath the waves, this gentle species has been pushed to the edge of extinction by human actions.
They are a reminder that the ocean’s most vulnerable creatures often disappear quietly. No headlines. No warning. Just a species slowly fading away.
If the vaquita vanishes, it won’t just be the loss of one animal — it will be the loss of a unique part of Earth’s story that can never be replaced.
We are the generation with the power to decide whether the vaquita becomes a memory or a species that survives.
The ocean is still fighting. We must fight for it too. 💙
