In honour of WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK here are 6 things I think every new mom and mom-to-be should know about breastfeeding 🌸
Breastfeeding is often described as natural, but that doesn't mean it comes naturally to every mom & baby. If you're finding it harder than you expected, trust me, you're not alone.
✨ 1. Breastfeeding is a skill you need to learn. For both you and your baby. It can take time, patience and practice to find your rhythm.
✨ 2. Cluster feeding is normal. Those long nights where baby wants to feed constantly doesn’t usually mean your milk isn't enough. Cluster feeding helps stimulate your milk supply and is especially common during growth spurts.
✨ 3. You don’t have to "push through" the painSome tenderness and sensitivity in the early days can happen, but persistent pain, cracked ni***es or a painful latch are signs to seek support.
✨ 4. Don’t watch the clock. Watch the nappies. Wet and dirty nappies tell you more than the length of a feed. One of the best signs that your baby is getting enough milk is healthy weight gain and plenty of wee & poo nappies, not how long they spend at the breast.
✨ 5. Skin-to-skin is powerful. It helps regulate your baby's body temperature, heart rate and breathing, encourages feeding cues, supports milk production and strengthens your bond.
✨ 6. Watch your babies hunger cues.In the early weeks, feed your baby on demand, not on a schedule. Babies feed for comfort, hydration, growth and nutrition. Watching your baby's hunger cues is usually more helpful than watching the clock.
✨ 7. Don’t be scared to ask for helpBreastfeeding isn't meant to be something you have to figure out alone. If you're struggling with latching, pain, supply concerns or simply need reassurance, please reach out to a lactation consultant.
When in doubt... Whip it out 😉
To every new mom reading this, you're doing better than you think. 🤍
Save this post for those early newborn days or share it with a preggy mama who might need the reminder.
