GBV has long been a pandemic in our country. GBV is not only about putting supportive financial structures in place, but also about providing mentorship and emotional support. GBV happens in societies where women are not fully respected and valued as individuals. To eradicate this, two things need to happen. Firstly, programs must be put in place so that women can become financially independent, not having to rely on abusive partners for basic survival. Secondly, we need to shift mindsets towards respect for women and, just as importantly, teach women and young girls the confidence and self-respect that enables them to take back their own power. This is why our NPO's "Young Girls and Women's Self-Empowerment Project" is vital for this country. We need to unite and stand together in implementing this.

When we stop judging each other and start thinking of others as 'we', rather than 'them' and 'me', we become part of a greater society, where everything becomes possible.

My father once said, 'Wherever you go, always plant fruit trees and plant a vegetable garden, even if you don't benefit, it will benefit the people that come after you.' For many years, he was an expat, so we moved houses a few times. He had grown up in a small town at a time when communities were still connected to sustainability and agriculture. As an intellectual, he was fascinated by methods and would share his knowledge about agriculture. We learned about slash-and-burn and crop rotation and were given seeds and children's gardening tools, and encouraged in planting our own small gardens. We would plant, water, and watch our seeds grow, caring for the plants before eventually harvesting our own crops.

"I have never lost this early connection - the feeling of mud and earth between my toes and fingers, the pulse of the earth, the knowledge that we are all connected. By teaching children to look after the earth, we teach them accountability and sustainability and a connection to all life.
