Dr Esther Mahlangu’s honorary Retrospective and her latest collaboration with BMW
Few artists are as distinctly etched into South African consciousness as that of Dr Esther Mahlangu – to call her ‘iconic’, is an understatement. As an artist and global leader in the Ndebele artistic tradition, Dr Esther Mahlangu’s style is geometric, bold and nuanced – and signature to her process, is that she has applied her style to all manner of contemporary contexts. Most notably, is the BMW 525i as part of BMW’s ‘Art Car’ Series in 1991. Dr Mahlangu became the first woman in history to participate in the legendary series, as well as the first African artist, and for over three decades, the emblematic car has travelled across the globe from Italy, to China, New York and more.
Now, the original car has returned home and is on show as part of a broad and deep exhibition titled ‘Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting”: Esther Mahlangu. A Retrospective.’, curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, who noted “Mahlangu’s journey is a testament to passion, innovation, and resilience. The retrospective pays homage to Esther Mahlangu’s unique approach to art, which intersects African cultures with modernity and the contemporary. The exhibition celebrates Mahlangu’s voice, agency, and pioneering spirit, symbolising her self-enunciation, self-determination and creativity.”

Mahlangu's history with BMW dates back to 1991 when she became the first woman and African artist to participate in the legendary BMW Art Car series, painting the iconic BMW 525i ¹ ² ³. This car has traveled globally, from Italy to China and New York, and is now showcased at the Iziko Museums of South Africa in Cape Town until August 11, 2024 ¹ ².
The BMW Group South Africa honored Mahlangu with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the South African Creative Arts Awards, recognizing her exceptional contributions to contemporary art ³.

In a constantly changing environment, having Life Skills is an essential part of being able to meet the challenges of everyday life. The dramatic changes in global economies over the past decade have been matched with the transformation in technology and these are all impacting on education, the workplace and in household settings.

To cope with the increasing pace and change of modern life, young people need new life skills such as the ability to deal with stress and frustration. Today’s youth will have many new jobs over the course of their lives, with associated pressures and the need for flexibility.

NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE PROGRAMME

National Youth Service Programme (NYSP) is a government initiative aimed at engaging South African youth in community service activities to strengthen service delivery, build patriotism, promote nation-building, foster social cohesion and to assist the youth to acquire occupational skills necessary to access sustainable livelihood opportunities. The NYDA provides a secretarial function to the National Youth Service, which is the single largest service programme for young people in the country.

TYPP engaged 300 young patriots across the country to activate the strategic objectives of the DAC. The key areas of work for the young patriots include activities aimed at popularising national symbols such as the national anthem and the national flag in schools, the audit of human treasures in communities as well as installation of flag poles. These activities are intended to build awareness on the South African history and instill a sense of patriotism amongst the recruited patriots.

The NYDA has a long-standing partnership with the Flemish Government on youth development. The cooperation between the NYDA and the Flemish Government on up-scaling and promoting Youth Volunteering in civil society organisations was launched in 2012 and the new 5 year framework has been developed for 2015-2020, focusing on capacity building, knowledge generation, marketing and communication and lobbying and advocacy.

The NYDA has identified the need to take practical steps to increase youth volunteering because of the significant benefits that are likely to flow from involving young South Africans in volunteering and community service programmes. Research suggests that volunteering helps youth break the poverty cycle by facilitating access to decent work.

This could therefore assist in alleviating South Africa’s high unemployment levels which affect mostly young people. In addition, youth volunteering can develop young leaders to take responsibility, foster social cohesion, encourage greater citizen participation, generate respect for equality, promote diversity and develop individual and collective voices.

Who are we?
The NYDA is a South African-based agency established primarily to address challenges faced by the nation’s youth. The Agency was established by an Act of Parliament (Act 54 of 2008). The institution was established to be a single, unitary structure addressing youth development issues at National, Provincial and Local Government level. The Agency should be seen within the broad context of South Africa’s development dynamics.

The Agency derives its mandate from the legislative frameworks, including the National Youth Development Agency Act, 2008 (Act 54 of 2008) (NYDA Act), the National Development Plan 2030, the National Youth Policy 2030 and the approved Integrated Youth Development Strategy (IYDS 2022/2025). The Agency assumed and improved the operational platform developed by the merger of the National Youth Commission and the Umsobomvu Youth Fund, which rendered the Agency operational with immediate effect. In addition, the staff component of its predecessors was also incorporated into the NYDA. The strategy of the NYDA can be summarized as follows:

- The NYDA Act no 54 of 2008 further mandates the NYDA to develop and implement an Integrated Youth Development Strategy (IYDS) for South Africa and initiate, design, coordinate, evaluate and monitor all programmes that aim to integrate the youth into the economy and society in general. These initiated programmes aim to alleviate poverty, urban and rural development, combating of crime and substance abuse as well as social decay amongst youth. The NYDA lobbied other organs of state to consider national priorities in respect of youth development when planning their activities regarding their implementation of youth development priorities. The NYDA will continue to monitor and evaluate youth development interventions across the board and mobilize youth for active participation in civil society engagements.
