BBC UNDER ATTACK BY WOMEN ORGANISATION FOR NOMINATING BARBRA BANDA FOR AWARD

The BBC has come under criticism from the Women's Rights Network (WRN) for nominating Zambian footballer Barbra Banda for its Women's Footballer of the Year award. Banda, 24, was previously left out of Zambia’s 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations squad due to concerns that her testosterone levels exceeded the limits set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). While Banda did not undergo formal testing or face a ban, her exclusion was reportedly an internal team decision, as she declined to take testosterone-lowering medication due to potential side effects.

According to MailOnline, WRN and others, including former athletes Tracy Edwards and Sharron Davies, criticized the nomination, arguing it undermines fairness in women’s sports. However, the BBC defended its decision, citing Banda's achievements, including playing in the Olympics, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and her record-breaking transfer to Orlando Pride in the U.S.

Banda expressed her desire to become a football legend, highlighting the challenges she has faced in her career. Despite the backlash, her nomination reflects her outstanding performance over the past year.
