The sparks in the workshop are more than just a byproduct of grinding metal - they are the start of sustainable livelihoods. Three weeks into the IMALI Project’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program, students in our Welding and Metal Fabrication course are mastering the skills they need to establish themselves in the industry. Thanks to the Embassy of Sweden in Harare and We Effect Southern Africa this hands-on training focuses on real-world application. We will be featuring a different course every day, so stay tuned to see what else is happening in the workshops.

The champions rounded up the week pushing the "Eat Well, Live Well" agenda as part of the Ending Drug and Substance Abuse campaign in the community. Partnering with The City of Bulawayo, under the theme "Painting Hope, Shaping Futures", young people came together at the youth centre to learn more about the risks currently faced by their generation and find better strategies to end in the City, working in collaboration with the community and other key stakeholders. The UF Youth thrive to build a city vested in a nutritious indigenous lifestyle, void of current unhealthy ways of living affecting young people.

Yesterday's energy at the Bulawayo MSMEs Winter Expo was exactly what World MSMEs Day is all about. Our BVTO stands stretched across the City Hall Car Park, packed with members showcasing their enterprises. The crowds followed the smell of BeJoVi events' food straight to us, staying to check out top-quality baobab coffees, peanut butter, and detergents.

We had a great visit from Dr. Mavis Sibanda, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development. She spent time at our stand and praised the quality and packaging of the products our members are putting out.

While the Expo buzzed outside, the official launch took place concurrently inside the Small City Hall. The conversation focused heavily on how MSMEs drive our economy. We also heard some encouraging news: the Bulawayo City Council intends to set up a dedicated office for MSMEs.

But the discussion wasn't sugar-coated. Stakeholders openly addressed the negative impact of traders involved in illegal activities and how that muddies Bulawayo's image. Honest conversations are the only way we grow. Throughout this conference, we had entertainment from the talented Khaya Arts Productions , keeping the spirits high and attendees engaged.

Today, is the final day of the Expo. Grab a friend and come support these local businesses.
This work is part of the IMALI Project, and we appreciate the continued partnership of We Effect Southern Africa and the Embassy of Sweden in Harare in making these market linkages happen.

Yesterday was the first day of the Bulawayo MSMEs Winter Expo, and it showed us exactly what local entrepreneurs are capable of when given the right platform. Visitors crowded the Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Organisation (BVTO) stand yesterday, and it was rewarding to see so many people buying products directly from the hands that made them. We brought over 10 representatives from our members' income-generating enterprises, and they delivered. Our members stocked the shelves with locally produced peanut butter, dairy fruit mix drinks, syrup concentrates, corn-soya blend porridge, and beautifully woven hats. The packaging and presentation easily rival anything you see in a formal supermarket. We are still here today and tomorrow. Come down, meet the makers, and pick up something locally made.

We officially launched the IMALI TVET program, a vital step toward creating sustainable livelihoods for our community.

We welcomed a diverse group of participants—spanning all ages and backgrounds—who are ready to dive into courses ranging from Hotel and Culinary Studies and Motor Mechanics to Solar Installation, ICT, and Urban Agriculture. These sessions are now underway at the Bulawayo Projects Centre - BPC in Thorngrove and Cowdray Park, marking the start of a transformative journey for these entrepreneurs.

This program is about equipping our members with the skills to turn their informal work into fully-fledged, sustainable businesses. We are incredibly grateful to our partners at We Effect Southern Africa and the Embassy of Sweden in Harare for their continued support in making these opportunities a reality for our members.

Here’s to new beginnings and new skills!

The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works and Office of the President and Cabinet is hosting a High Level Provincial Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sub Committee Review Meeting today under the theme "Strengthening WASH Governance in Informal Markets: Reflections from the Provincial Review Meeting".

Some key reflections from our Executive Director, Michael Mdladla Ndiweni on the state of WASH in highly informalised urban economies, with particular focus on the realities of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province include:

1. The management of MSMEs remains not so well coordinated. For instance, in some cases, relations between stakeholders have become toxic, resulting in mistrust, weak communication and the undermining of both municipal By-laws and National laws. This weak coordination affects service delivery, market order, public health, revenue collection and the overall sustainability of informal sector governance.
2. Limited availability of resources to improve WASH infrastructure in informal trading spaces. Many traders operate in environments where access to adequate toilets, clean water, waste disposal systems, bins and skips remains a serious concern. Yet these traders contribute significantly to the local economy and deserve safe, clean and dignified workplaces.
3. the need for more research and practical models on how WASH systems can work effectively in highly informalised economies. Informal markets have unique realities. Therefore, WASH interventions must be designed with traders, local authorities, residents, government departments, development partners and the private sector working together.
4. Market construction and upgrading must prioritise safe markets with reliable water and sanitation facilities. A market should not only be a place of trade, but also a healthy, organised and inclusive economic space. Traders must also continue to participate in clean-up campaigns, waste management initiatives and other community-led efforts that promote a cleaner city.
5. Ensure future WASH model must be guided by the principle of Leaving No One Behind, especially the poor, women, youths, persons with disabilities, informal traders and vulnerable communities. Debates around prepaid water systems and the privatisation of water must be approached carefully. Water is not just an economic commodity; it is a basic human need.

Several WASH improvement strategies where therefore alluded to including the strengthening of Provincial WASH Committees involving traders and local authorities; continuous awareness raising; improved revenue collection from traders; and the provision of bins, skips and other waste management facilities. Partnerships with various stakeholders will also be critical in mobilising resources, strengthening accountability and improving market infrastructure.

The future of our cities depends on how well we manage the relationship between livelihoods, public health, urban order and inclusive governance. Informal traders are not a problem to be removed; they are economic actors who must be organised, supported and included in building cleaner, safer and more resilient cities.

A strong WASH system in informal markets is not only about toilets, water points and bins. It is about dignity, public health, trust, accountability, collaboration and sustainable urban development.

This is Nkosi. He is a young man from St. Joseph’s in Matobo District, and was among 20 youths who participated in a Basic Solar Installation Training facilitated by the Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Organisation (BVTO) under the Market Aggregation Linking Innovation and Markets (MALI) Project. The initiative is implemented by BVTO with support from the Embassy of Sweden 🇸🇪 through We Effect, hosted at the Matopo Youth Development Initiative (MYDI).

The training equipped participants with practical skills in solar installation, maintenance, electrical systems fundamentals, and solar-powered borehole systems. For many of the young people, this training programme was a gateway to possibilities.

Inspired by the experience and determined to build a future for himself, Nkosi took a bold step forward. With additional support received, he began pursuing solar installation professionally within his community and launched his company.

Today, he is actively marketing his services through digital platforms, growing his visibility and building a name for himself as a young renewable energy entrepreneur in Matobo.

Nkosi’s story reminds us that when young people are equipped with skills, tools, and opportunity, they do not just transform their own lives. They become catalysts for community development.

As Zimbabwe continues to embrace renewable energy solutions, young professionals like Nkosi are ready to power homes, businesses, and communities toward a brighter future.

If you are looking for solar installation services in Matobo and the surrounding areas, support local youth-led enterprise by working with young professionals like Nkosi.

At BVTO, we remain committed to empowering young people with practical skills, sustainable livelihoods, and pathways toward economic inclusion.

🌱 New Markets. New Connections. New Possibilities.

Last week, BVTO had the honour of participating in Umguza District's first-ever Market Fair following an invitation from AGRITEX Umguza District.

With support from the Embassy of Sweden through our funding partner We Effect under the Integrated Market Aggregation Linking Markets and Innovation (IMALI) Project, BVTO showcased its services alongside three women-led enterprises from our membership. Additional products were exhibited in absentia, ensuring that more entrepreneurs could benefit from the opportunity.

Held at Nyamandlovu Primary School Grounds and later at Redwood Farm, the fairs attracted well over 200 attendees across the two days. The events brought together community members, government departments, development partners, local leadership, and private sector representatives, including the National AIDS Council, Hamara, National Foods, AGRITEX officials, and local councillors.

Visitors showed tremendous interest in the products on display, including peanut butter, oyster mushrooms, dairy mix juice, and baobab coffee. One exhibitor received particularly encouraging feedback when attendees suggested that her products deserved shelf space in local shops because of their quality and market appeal.

Beyond the exhibitions, the fairs created valuable opportunities for networking, learning, and market exploration. We were especially inspired by the participation of young entrepreneurs and the vibrant performances by learners from Nyamandlovu Primary School, which added energy and pride to the occasion.

As BVTO, we left Umguza encouraged by what we saw: strong local demand, innovative entrepreneurs, and clear opportunities to strengthen market linkages within the district.

We are grateful to AGRITEX Umguza District for the invitation and warm hospitality, and to the Embassy of Sweden and We Effect for supporting initiatives that help entrepreneurs connect to markets and grow sustainable businesses.

This may have been Umguza's first Market Fair, but we believe it is only the beginning of something much bigger.

Today marked an exciting milestone as we joined the first ever Umguza Market Fair in Nyamandlovu following an invitation from AGRITEX Umguza District.

With support from the Embassy of Sweden through our funding partner We Effect under the Integrated Market Aggregation Linking Markets and Innovation (IMALI) Project, BVTO exhibited its services alongside some of our vibrant members, while others participated in absentia through showcased products including peanut butter, oyster mushrooms, dairy mix juice and baobab coffee to name a few.

The atmosphere was electric. Farmers, entrepreneurs, local leadership, service providers, and development stakeholders gathered in numbers.

We had meaningful conversations with farmers from across Umguza, connected with local governance structures and stakeholders, and witnessed something every small business dreams of: products moving, networks growing, and opportunities opening. Sales were made. Contacts exchanged. Partnerships planted.

This exhibition reminded us that rural markets are full of untapped potential and resilient entrepreneurs ready to grow when given the right support and connections. BVTO is excited about the future of our relationship with the Umguza community and the possibilities that lie ahead for market linkages, innovation, and inclusive economic empowerment.

The road ahead looks promising, and today was a beautiful first step.
