The secret to longer tummy time πŸ–€

We asked Dr Amy Clibbens (Norman) | Pregnancy + Family Chiropractor to show us why our Under the Sea Water Mat works so well β€” and here's what she had to say:

πŸ–€ It keeps babies engaged and distracted for longer, so they stay down happily instead of protesting after 30 seconds

πŸ–€ It's an unstable surface that shifts and changes as they move β€” so they're constantly adjusting, building strength and control

πŸ–€ The floating toys move and shift, giving them something to track, reach for and stay interested in

πŸ–€ As they get older they can push up and even stand on it, for a whole different type of sensory feedback

Tummy time is one of the simplest things you can do for your baby's development β€” the hard part is just getting them to enjoy it. That's exactly what we designed this for

Even a minute or two counts. Start small and follow their lead.

Do I need to entertain my baby all day?

Short answer: no.

The pressure to constantly stimulate, set up sensory activities, rotate toys and be "on" from wake to sleep is real β€” but it's not what babies actually need.

Let them be part of your world. Let them watch you cook, fold laundry, water the plants, hang up washing. Talk to them like you'd talk to a friend. Pop them in the carrier while you make a coffee. Give them quiet moments to just look around.

Babies build brains through connection, predictability, and the ordinary rhythm of your day. Not through Pinterest activities.

Save this for the next time the mum guilt hits 🀍

A day in my life πŸ–€
My days are full β€” there's no pretending otherwise. Between visiting our stockists, packing orders, working away on my laptop and spending time with my kids, it's certainly a juggle to fit it all in.

But here's the truth: my family will always be my most important thing, and this business? It's my third baby. I've put blood, sweat and tears into it β€” and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm so passionate about what we do at Young Wonderer, and I try to enjoy every single moment of building it. Even on the full days, I can't wait to get back to work on it.

Thanks for being here πŸ–€

Sensory play doesn't need a Pinterest board, a trip to Kmart, or a themed sensory tray.

It can be as simple as:
🀍 A walk outside, feet in the grass
🀍 A dollop of yoghurt on the highchair tray (safe if it goes in the mouth)
🀍 Pots and wooden spoons on the kitchen floor
🀍 Your voice, your face, a high contrast book

The pressure to set up elaborate messy play, sensory bins and colour-coded activities is real β€” but your baby's brain doesn't need any of that. It needs you, and the world around them.

Swipe through for what sensory play actually looks like at every stage, from day one β†’ 6+ months 🀍

It’s not just a tummy time mat. Our Under the Sea Sensory Water Mat grows with your baby from 0–18 months β€” here are 5 different ways to use it at every stage.

01/07/2026

The answer? Tummy time 🀍

Here's why it's the single best thing you can do with your baby every day:

- Builds neck, shoulder, back + core strength β€” the foundation for rolling, sitting, crawling
- Develops eye tracking + visual focus
- Encourages hand-eye coordination
- Helps prevent flat spots on the back of baby's head

The trick? Make it enjoyable.

This little one is using our Welcome to the World, Little One book and our Under the Sea Sensory Water Mat β€” bonus: they're both high-contrast black and white, so they double up as vision development for those still-developing newborn eyes 🀍

Even 5 minutes at a time counts. Start in short increments this slowly increase their time, watch the strength build πŸ’ͺ

If anyone has ever told you you're holding your baby too much β€” please save this. 🀍

The science is clear: you physically cannot spoil a newborn. Their brains aren't developed enough to manipulate, expect, or demand. When they cry, they need you. When you respond, you're literally helping wire their nervous system for emotional regulation.

One of the most-cited studies in this field (Bell & Ainsworth, 1972) found that babies whose cries were responded to quickly in the first months actually cried less by 12 months β€” not more.

Hold them. Soothe them. Wear them. Feed them to sleep. Follow your instincts. You're not creating a bad habit. You're nurturing a human.

I don't want to be the brand that's on sale every second month. It's not sustainable for a small business, and it's not fair on you to wonder if you should hold out for a sale.
So instead, here's my promise: I'll always have a bundle deal running, all year round. No waiting for a sale, no FOMO.

Right now it's our High Contrast Starter Pack β†’ rectangle water mat + Welcome to the World Little One book + your choice of hanging toy, from $55.
Bundle deals will change often so grab this one while you can!

Almost a year and a half ago, I was made redundant from my full-time job β€” while I was on my second mat leave πŸ–€
Thank goodness I had my side hustle to fall back on… except I didn't fall back on it. I fell forward.
Young Wonderer started as a passion project, and now I'm completely obsessed β€” obsessed with this brand, obsessed with helping little babies develop, and I genuinely can't picture myself doing anything else in this world.
Thank you for being here. Truly. None of this happens without your support πŸ–€
