One of my fav designs to embroider by hand is Australian native flora like the Bottle brush.

Get the outline wrong, and everything that follows is wrong too. So this part may look simple, but it sets up the entire piece.

Not for everybody.

Fun fact: I started learning how to solve a Rubik’s Cube as a way to manage my emotions.

Now I solve one every single day. It’s the first puzzle of the day. A few quiet minutes to focus, reset and put something back in order before the day tries to scramble me.

Here are five things it has taught me about making hats.

1. Both start out looking like a complete mess. You just have to trust that it’ll eventually come together.

2. One wrong move doesn’t f**k the whole thing. You work around it and keep going.

3. You can’t solve everything at once. Focus on the bit in front of you, then move on to the next.

4. Do something enough times and your hands eventually know what to do before your brain does.

5. You can’t rush either of them. It’s just patience, focus and hundreds of tiny moves most people will never notice.

What’s something you do every day that helps keep your head straight?

What started during the pandemic with zero background in fashion or art somehow turned into people sending me ideas from all over the world to turn into wearable art.

And honestly, that’s the best part.

People don’t just wear these.
They connect with them.

Not for everybody.

Just like a tattoo, the embroidery starts with the outline.

This first layer sets the shape, placement and proportions of the entire design. I use a single strand of thread to slowly map the artwork onto the felt, one stitch at a time.

Once the outline feels right, I can begin building the detail, colour, texture and shading inside it.

There’s no machine following a digital file and no shortcut hiding behind the camera. Just a needle, thread and a ridiculous amount of patience.

Get the outline wrong, and everything that follows is wrong too. So this part may look simple, but it sets up the entire piece.

Now multiply that by a few thousand.
