Glenn Murcutt AO sheltering under an aeroplane wing in Mexico became the starting point for Melbourne’s 2019 M-Pavilion, the first project in tension membrane.

The brief called for a shallow, sleek roofline. The physics said tension membranes need steep falls to shed water.
Our engineering team ran the FEM/FEA case studies to make both true at once.

Rigid steel, soft skin, glowing lantern-like after dark. Precision, dressed as ease.

A canopy that works as hard as the cars underneath it.

For Kia’s activation at the Australian Open, we engineered a tensile fabric structure built to shift with the day, crisp white sail by afternoon, a lit canvas by night.
Come sundown, the arches carry colour instead of shadow.

Form, function, and a few thousand fans walking underneath it.

From above, the scale of the Albert Park build reveals itself, a striking geometric canopy holding its own against the F1 precinct, the Melbourne skyline, and the lake beyond. Structure engineered to perform at the biggest event on the calendar.

Pattons was honoured at the 2026 Awards Dinner, taking home the win in the Tension Structures category for the Kia structure created for the Australian Open.

A structure like this doesn’t just cover a precinct. It gives it a rhythm.

In daylight, the large-span canopy creates a clear place for people to gather, eat, watch and reset. The open frame allows movement to stay easy, while the fabric roof provides the shade and comfort needed to make the space genuinely usable through long summer sessions.

As the light changes, the same structure takes on a completely different role. The roof becomes a canvas for colour, the steel frame gains definition, and the entire precinct shifts from a practical daytime space into a vibrant social destination.

That transformation is what makes event infrastructure matter. It is not only about shelter or scale. It is about designing a structure that can support how people use the space, while also giving the precinct a strong identity from morning through to night.

TOPCOURT precinct structure for the AO 2026.

Designed as a large-scale temporary stage and crowd space, the build combines heavy-duty black steel trusswork with layered blue shade sail systems that completely transform the atmosphere underneath. From wide angles, the structure feels massive. Up close, the detailing starts to stand out.

Integrated rigging throughout the roof system supports lighting, audio, LED screens and full stage production infrastructure, all engineered to operate reliably across long summer days, heavy crowds and constant movement.

One of those builds where the public experiences the atmosphere, but underneath it is a serious amount of planning, fabrication and coordination holding everything together

1573 Arena (Show Court 2) at AO 2026

Every year, Pattons installs the temporary grandstand shade structure that wraps the outside of the stadium seating giving real shade to this outdoor court when it matters most.

This one’s a bit special: a cantilevered shade structure that actually goes in (not out) compared to most grandstand builds. It takes around two weeks to install, then less than a week to remove once the tournament wraps.

The best part? When it’s packed down, you wouldn’t even know it was there. We designed a patching system with recessed anchor sleeves that get plugged clean finish during the off-season, then unsealed and bolted back on when AO returns.
