I have watched the latest comments from Lyle Shelton regarding Courtney Act and the Botanic Gardens, and I cannot help but reflect on my own experience.

I became involved in a lengthy legal dispute following comments Mr Shelton made about me after a Drag Queen Story Time event in Brisbane Town library in 2020.

That matter is still continuing. Importantly, there has not yet been a final determination that Mr Shelton engaged in vilification. The Queensland Civil and Administrative Appeal Tribunal did, however, find in 2026 that the earlier tribunal decision had applied the wrong legal test, and the matter remains before the relevant tribunal process.

So when I now see Mr Shelton publicly calling for Courtney Act to lose a Botanic Gardens ambassadorship and for a children's activity connected with her book to be cancelled, I find myself asking a very simple question:

When does criticism of drag performers become an ongoing campaign to exclude us from public life?

I am not asking anyone to agree with everything a drag performer says, does or represents. People are entitled to their own views, and parents are entitled to make their own choices about what their children participate in.

But I also have the right to participate in public life, to perform, to express myself and to be treated with dignity. Those rights don't disappear simply because someone disagrees with drag.

What particularly troubles me is the repeated framing of drag performers and LGBTQIA+ people as something from which children supposedly need to be protected. In my own case, comments made about me have had consequences that have extended far beyond a disagreement about a children's event.

And I think there is another question worth asking.

Mr Shelton publicly identifies himself with Christianity and has written about the role of Christians in public life. I don't claim the authority to tell another person how to practise their faith. But I do think it is entirely reasonable to ask whether the way public disagreements are conducted reflects the values of compassion, dignity, humility and respect that many Christians would recognise as important.

I have spent years dealing with the consequences of this particular dispute. I know what it is like to have your identity, your work and your character placed into a public political debate.

So I will continue to stand up for my rights β€” respectfully, lawfully and without asking for anyone else's rights to be taken away.

I don't need everyone to like drag.

I simply expect the same basic rights, dignity and freedom afforded to everyone else.

Lyle Shelton is trying to cancel Courtney Act. The conservative commentator is calling for the drag star to lose her Botanic Gardens of Sydney ambassadorship and demanding the cancellation of a children’s activity based on her picture book. Read the full story here:

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ VICTORY AFTER 7 YEARS πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

After almost seven years of legal battles, stress, and relentless attacks on our community, justice has finally prevailed.

This win means so much more than a court decision. It is a victory for every LGBTQIA+ person who has ever been told they don't belong. It is a victory for the drag community of Brisbane and Australia, and for everyone who believes in equality, dignity, and respect.

For seven years, I stood my ground and refused to be silenced. I stood up for my rights, for my community, and for the incredible drag performers who bring joy, creativity, and acceptance into the lives of so many people.

What makes this victory even more special is that it comes during Pride Month β€” a time when we celebrate who we are, how far we've come, and the work that still lies ahead.

The hate and division directed at our community over these years has been disappointing and damaging. No one should face vilification simply for being who they are or expressing themselves through art and performance.

This week's Supreme Court decision marks another significant defeat for Lyle Shelton in his long-running case against me. It sends a powerful message that our community will continue to stand strong, stand together, and stand proud.

Thank you to everyone who supported me throughout this journey LGBTI Legal Services. Your encouragement, advocacy, and belief in equality helped make this possible.

🌈 Happy Pride Month.
🌈 Keep showing up.
🌈 Keep speaking out.
🌈 Keep being proud.

Please share this post and help spread the message that love, inclusion, and equality will always be stronger than hate.
