For kids, this is *the thing* they look forward to at Lunar New year! Lucky money packets! 🧧

I could have designed a traditional red packet (we often refer to the money packet as red envelopes), however my favourite packets have always been the metallic pink packets! Because they fancy!

I designed a kumquat tree for the front of the lucky packet. My nana always had two kumquat trees on either side of her front door. Kumquat trees are a New year tradition, with the more kumquats on the tree thought to bring more luck to the house. On the back of the lucky packet is a little lucky red knot button, an extra lucky charm for an extra lucky year!

So I made something very specific for Lunar New Year. This is unique, and probably the 👏🏼 only 👏🏼 time 👏🏼 you will ever see this! Dare I say a world first (I have no idea honestly lol)?!

When I go to my nana’s house for Lunar New Year celebrations, I always play this game with my cousins. It’s called Bau cau cá cop… however I just call it the crab game 😆🙊. My cousins and I bet with small silver coins only, so we can pile our coin piles high! It’s always rowdy and we yell and cheer for the sake of it. Because it’s Lunar New Year!!

A personal thank you to Andy , as it turns out we have the same cultural heritage so we reminisced over all the fun we have at New Year.

Representation is incredibly important at Ana ma Petit Tresor. This collection for Lunar New Year has been carefully designed with heartfelt thought. I designed this to honour my cultural heritage and share my heritage with pride and love. I truly hope you enjoy these pieces with this in mind ☺️

This year will be the year of the dragon. The dragon is known as the most auspicious animal of the 12 animals in the zodiac calendar. People born in the year of the dragon are said to be charismatic, naturally lucky and intelligent.

My daughter Ana happens to be a dragon. And while it wasn’t necessarily planned that way my entire family was happy about that! So this is her year!

As you can see, red has featured heavily in my designs. While red is my ultimate favourite colour, the reason for so much red is because it is the luckiest colour in many Asian cultures. It’s a symbol of joy, celebration, and of course good fortune!

I kept returning to my dragon design, pondering over colours and the flare of its tail. I choose bright gold glitter for fortune and luck, and pearl red for the glisten of the dragon’s body. It even has tiny white teeth!

Firecrackers always, always remind me of Lunar New Year!

I have childhood memories of attending Lunar New Year festivals in Brisbane and there would always be a long line of firecrackers that would be lit once the official ceremony finished. The loud sounds from firecrackers are supposed to scare away bad luck or evil spirits.

Now I’m not going to speculate whether firecrackers actually do that, but firecrackers are always associated with celebrations!

These lil firecrackers have gold ‘sparks’ flying off the end of the crackers. I’ve made these into earrings but they can easily be made into a brooch as well ☺️
