My advice is to always have a spare handy because breaking one mid sew is super annoying! Especially if it’s over something so silly!

I don’t need more patterns.
I need the RIGHT ones!!!

Over time I have realised that good design isn’t just about the line drawings. It’s about how much information the designer gives you. If I’m investing time, money and energy… I want clarity and ease of use. I’m time poor and sewing is slow.

1. Projectors:
I switched to a projector because I was sick of taping paper together and the waste that came with it. And it’s cheaper than buying paper and ink continuously. Plus it is really annoying to store paper patterns. We live in a digital age so if I’m buying patterns online it’s easier for me to project and cut.
If I see a pattern I love I’ll definitely buy it even if there’s no projector file but I really think about whether I want to commit the time and energy.

2. Finished Garment Measurements:
I personally rely on this and fitting notes from the designer. It’s very rare I come across a pattern without this info but if I see it I run away! I need my garment to fit when I finish otherwise it’s a waste and disappointment.

3: Real-life tester photos:
I want to make sure I’m supporting real designers and not those who are trying to make a quick buck with AI. I also love seeing the garments on real bodies and their opinions about the pattern. This one I do compromise on.

2026 is about building intentional wardrobe pieces that feel like me 🥰 and extra bonus points if I can wear it it to work as a teacher!

I specifically was searching for blouse patterns that would fit into my wardrobe and Cath sent me a picture wearing hers which I had saved when it first released. This make is heavily inspired by hers which is a gorgeous blue and white blouse.

The pattern is the by .masin and is such a stunning silhouette. It balances romantic and effortless at the same time. I am similar sizing to Cath so whilst my measurements had me at a size C, I followed Cath’s lead and sized down. It is a perfect fit especially around the neckline and I love the drape in the sleeves. The pattern pieces were such fun shapes and I enjoyed how quickly it came together until binding the neckline 😅 that part took me fiveever haha 🤦‍♀️ I interfaced both neckline pieces and I wish I had only done one - it made the placket too stiff and when I tuck my shirt it bows a little but it’s minor and honestly not super noticeable (but I know 😭)

This print is Mira from and it is printed on linen. I must say I am extremely impressed with the quality of the linen. The first thing I noticed is how soft the linen is but the thing I love the most is that it doesn’t crease like other linens. 🙌 I washed this shirt and hung it on a coat hanger and it just dries so beautifully. Very much loving the effortlessness of this fabric! I purchased 2m of the fabric and managed to use the majority but I did have to cut my neckline plackets on the bias. I don’t really love how I’ve placed the dark vine in the neckline but that’s something to pay attention to in the future. 🤦‍♀️

Definitely going to make another and I think I already have a print in mind!

I was feeling very disappointed this year because I didn’t achieve my goal of drafting a simple pattern for myself. But it has been a very big chaotic year and I did not have the capacity to add an extra thing in 😅 (super unrealistic)

Upon reflection of all the things I’ve made this year I’ve realised that this has been my BEST year of sewing. Every single garment was thoughtful and in my colour way. I took my time and made toiles for a few things so my finished pieces actually fit well and become something I reach for regularly. I learnt how to insert an invisible zipper in a lined garment and also how to do piping. My pink dress has been viewed 19k times which is higher than any other static post. One of my tutorials has been saved over 300 times. I’m actually really proud of what I have accomplished this year especially with everything else happening in my life.

Thank you so much for a warm welcome back to the Gram and Hello to the many new friends I have gained since my return!

Some of you have already noticed that I changed my Instagram name to ✨ This is for 2 main reasons.

1. When I closed my small business Aurora Marigold I couldn’t think of a sewing related name that I liked so I just went with my name. But I have always wanted it to be really specific but it took me forever to figure it out.

2. I recently graduated a Bachelor of Teaching. I will be working in a school next year and I just prefer to have my account related to my passion and not tied to my role at work. I hope that makes sense.

Same Cher but a new name essentially 🥰 I had my colours done last year and found out I’m a soft summer palette. I knew that I would be cool toned but it really helped me identify my best colours. It has really transformed how I shop for my fabrics and how my finished garments feel. I can honestly say this year I haven’t made one garment that didn’t feel like me!

A bit about me:
- I love colour and my favourite is green (least favourite is pink - don’t come for me 😂)
- I graduated makeup college in 2016 and worked as an artist for most of that time either for a company or freelancing. This is where my love of colour comes from.
- I have only travelled overseas once to Fiji. It was so beautiful but big culture shock especially post Corona
- I am married and we have 2 beautiful girls. Freya is 4 and Holly is 1 and a half
- I started studying my Bachelor of Education (primary) in 2020 and studied mostly part time while working and raising children
- When I was pregnant with my first born in 2021 I wanted to make a quilt and this is how my sewing journey began. Now I primarily sew garments and I’m so grateful to have met so many people along the way!

Wow! This season has finished and I have officially graduated from my Bachelor of Education primary!
I am so grateful to all the support I have received from my family and friends during this time! It is so exciting to be able to move into a teaching role for Year 3 next year!

I worked so hard this year especially to get it completed that I made many sacrifices (especially sleep and unfortunately sewing). But hard work does bring its rewards. I received a special award called the Augustin Award which is awarded to the student with the highest overall GPA! 😱 I had no idea I would be receiving it!

I made my dress and the girls dresses and it brought me so much joy and confidence in my day. The girls looked so adorable and we got so many compliments for our matching attire. I knew Hubby had a matching shirt too so it was such a cute moment.

Brisbane Frocktails photo dump!! Still living off the Frocktails high!

If you didn’t know I am a mum of 2 girls (almost 4 and 1 year old). I work as a makeup artist doing weddings once/ twice a month. I started working in admin 3 months ago just before the final semester of uni started 😅 I’m now on leave from work and completing my placement which is 3 days a week for 10 weeks 😱 Life since May has been utter chaos and busy which absolutely killed my sewing time 😭😭

I have been so excited for this event because it gave me the space to create and also get my extrovert on with likeminded friends 🥰 I had such a blast meeting and hanging out with my online friends and just able to talk about sewing with people that get it haha 😝

One of my favourite things to do as a child was flip to the back of a magazine to see what outfits were being worn to galas. Frocktails is like that except the people you meet are the crazy talented gurus who made their outfits and rock them! It was so much fun truly!

✨BRISBANE FROCKTAILS✨

What an amazing night! The committee is incredible for putting an amazing event together! Also loved this venue

I planned my outfit in May because I knew that when uni started that I would be under the pump!!! 😅 I had many ideas but the (prev known as forest and thread) Pleats and thank you jumpsuit lived rent free in my head for a year so I knew I needed to make it!

I’ve also always wanted to wear a leopard print but being a cool toned girly I never fell in love with the warm tones on my complexion! When I saw blue leopard print on I instantly fell in love! I ordered on a cotton twill base because it’s so soft and I knew it would drape beautifully.

I sewed my toile in July and I’m glad I did because I had some issues I was able to fix for the final 🙌 I ended up sewing a size 10 bodice graded out to a 14 in the waist. I’m 12cm shorter than the drafted height but I ended up only removing 2cm from waist and hip, 4cm from knee and 1cm from the hem to get a beautiful length that will work with heels and my Nikes. I purchased some small shoulder pads from the and they work so beautifully with the garment!

This is a sewing project for the busy mums who have daughters that love twirly dresses 🥰

Sutton is new pattern by and it’s such a gorgeous design. It doesn’t have seperate skirt and bodice pieces or a lining so it is super fast to whip up.

I also love understated Xmas designs and this one is perfect. It’s a cotton Lycra from designed by ☺️

The shacket of my dreams 🤎 purchased this beautiful Kiko wool from in May last year and cut out a size medium of the Bonnie Shacket by (she’s since discontinued this pattern) but by the time I was ready to make it, Holly was born and winter was coming to an end. In true ADHD fashion I felt no deadline to make it at that point so it stayed in my banish box until now!!

This is the first time I have really focused on matching prints because I wanted my placket to be perfect. I did make an oopsie and ended up having to cut 3-4 inches from the bottom to have it line up but it worked out so perfectly in length by the end.

I was so inspired by Rebecca’s version I was so excited to make my own. and I chatted about it on the podcast the winter episode(so many of our recs I still want to make). I really enjoyed the pattern. It was super simple to follow being my first coat and it is unlined. I think the hardest part was the hem with the wool and the curves. I just did a gathering stitch to pull it in a bit. I did omit the pockets on the chest and I think I’m actually going to unpick the side seams and put some there. Or maybe a welt pocket another time.

The wool is very soft, lightweight and the colours suit me perfectly! I did worry that because it was as a thicker fabric my plackets and collar wouldn’t turn out but they did and beautifully too. When I got to the end I realised my placket was 3 layers of wool and I was worried my auto button holes on my sewing machine wouldn’t work but my did it seamlessly. I actually have to buy more buttons on but it’s been challenging to go with the kids 😂😅 I’ve worn my shacket to work and it was very cosy!

Also do you like my new prescription sunnies for ? They’re called Crossfield and never did I think I would wear an aviator style but I really love them!
