Your visit to the Corner Store / Milk Bar was pretty much the equivalent cost of today’s standards.
Here’s a breakdown of the difference between today and back in 1977
In 1977, the average South Aussie home was just $35,000 and rent around $40 a week. A loaf of bread cost 30c, eggs were 80c a dozen, and a movie ticket just $2.50. The average weekly wage? About $210.
Fast-forward to 2025:
🏠 Houses are now around $750,000 (21× higher).
💵 Rent averages $550 a week (14× higher).
🍞 Bread is $3.50 (12×), eggs $6 (7.5×), mince $13.50 (11×).
🎬 Movies cost $25 (10×), beer $10.50 (13×), and ci******es a staggering $45 (37×).
👷 Average weekly wage? $1,900 (only 9× higher).
👉 The verdict:
• Groceries have risen roughly in line with wages (so not much worse).
• Housing & rent have blown out massively compared to income – the #1 pressure today.
• Entertainment is mixed – movies still fair, but beer is pricier and ci******es are way harder.
So yes, people struggled in the late ’70s… but mainly on a single income with high interest rates. Today, even with two incomes, housing affordability is the real killer.
