Gouache was the order of the day, along with artist Deb Mostert's book launch (see last image). I spent a wonderful day at the Ipswich Art Workshops, with the ever amazing Deb, learning ways with gouache within a sketchbook context. The workshop was then followed by the launch of Deb's new book 'A Sketchbook Practice', a peek into Deb's...well...sketchbook practice! It was lovely to see familiar faces. Check out Deb's work, and grab your copy of her book via her website www.debmostertartist.com.au. The book is amazing, in its content and construction. Last Sunday, I was excited to be involved with the Red Dress Project exhibition at the Museum of Brisbane as an 'Ambassador'. I was privileged to be one of many community members to volunteer their time, answering questions surrounding the project; How did it start? What is the point of it? Who contributed to the embroidery? Where is it going next? Which country is that panel representing?

Here are some photos I took of the Red Dress, taking up the space it deserves and representing ideas of inclusivity, vulnerability, strength, marginalisation...to name a few.

What the photos do not show are the crowds of visitors that made their way through the gallery space, observing the Red Dress with awe, wonder, and curiosity. Many visitors, of all ages and identities, shared their stories and observations with me, as we shared knowledge and gained greater understanding of each others' world views. The photos also do not show the commitment and tenacity of Kerryn from All Threads Embroidery, and Janelle of the Queensland Women’s Historical Association, who campaigned and fundraised to bring the Red Dress Project to Australia, ultimately made possible by the Warwick Art Gallery and the Museum of Brisbane.

I encourage you to visit the Red Dress, on display at the Museum of Brisbane until the 13th of September, 2026.

'The Red Dress' arrives in Meanjin (Brisbane, Australia) this week.

Through the hard work, persistence, and collaborative efforts of Kerryn Lightfoot of , members of the Allthreads Embroidery community, Janelle Byrne from the Queensland Women's Historical Association, the Warwick Art Gallery, and the Museum of Brisbane, British multidisciplinary artist Kirstie Macleod's 'The Red Dress' arrives in Brisbane this week.

The dress travelled the world from 2009 through to 2023, weaving into its threads the skill, artistry, and stories of embroiderers and textile artists from diverse cultures. Telling the stories of 'refugees, asylum seekers, survivors of war, and disadvantaged women', this is a collaborative work that celebrates identity, diversity, and equity.

I am privileged to be involved as an ambassador for this incredible project, hosted at the Museum of Brisbane.

Read more via the link about this incredible project, which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest collaborative embroidery project, and be sure to visit the exhibition and/or attend any of the scheduled community events.
