With holidays coming up it's a popular time of year for short, interstate trips and that involves a lot of staying with family and friends. When it comes to absorbency, not all inserts are created equal. You may have found that your reusable nappies were holding up just fine in the newborn phase but a few months later, you’re noticing leaks. One reason for this could be the material used to make your inserts.

Many so called “China Cheapies” come with a single microfibre insert and while this may work for light wetters or very young babies, compression leaks can get the better of you and lead to more outfit changes than a Lady Gaga concert.

People often ask what the best cloth nappy is. I’m sorry to say but there is no one perfect nappy. However, I promise you there is a perfect reusable nappy for you. And this blog is about working out which one that is.

This blog post isn’t going to contain anything new or ground-breaking I’m sorry to say. What it is going to do is take existing information and present it in what is a new and hopefully helpful format. We often talk about different types of nappies and break down the pros and cons and of each but I thought I’d flip that format on its head and start with the requirements and tell you what nappy would be best to fit those criteria

Confused about how many cloth nappies you will need?
This guide should help:
•
Newborns go through a lot of nappies, around 12 a day for the first 8 weeks in fact, I'm not even joking! Don't panic too much though because as they get older their output increases but the frequency decreases thank goodness! So with that in mind, to use modern cloth nappies full time you'll need:

- For a newborn you will need 24-30 nappies
- For a young infant around 4mths you'll need 18-20 nappies
- For an older infant around 8mths you'll need 14-16 nappies
- For a young toddler around 12mths you'll need 12-14 nappies
- For an older toddler over 18mths you'll need 10-12 nappies

When did you start using cloth nappies? Typically you hear of families starting to use cloth nappies within the first 12 weeks. But what if you didn’t know about cloth nappies then? What if the cloth nappies you had simply didn’t work effectively? What if you thought cloth was too hard? You aren’t alone! We have many families at Bubblebubs that started using cloth nappies after their child’s first birthday and they haven’t looked back!

Cloth nappies made from inferior materials or being too complicated is often a reason families all too quickly give up on modern cloth nappies. Sara started using reusable nappies on her last baby at 18 months. She wanted to use cloth nappies with her older children, however the nappies she had always leaked. Feeling unsupported she gave up until her sister gave her a pack of quality modern cloth nappies and with her support and knowledge, enabled Sara to successfully use cloth nappies on her son. She quickly transitioned her son into full-time cloth and was surprised how easy it was.

Guest blogger Haylee, kindly shared her story from thinking about using cloth to finally putting on her daughter’s first Cloth Nappy at 19 months. Haylee, like Sara, Molly and Renee from our previous blog on late starters to Cloth, all have one thing in common – they reached out for support. From friends to online communities and us here at Bubblebubs, these families were all able to gain the knowledge and support to successfully use Cloth Nappies on their older babies.
