To celebrate the Ekka's 150th anniversary, the Queensland Spinners Weavers and Fibre Artists, in partnership with ABC Radio Brisbane, have created a special commemorative quilt featuring handcrafted blocks from fibre enthusiasts across Queensland.

Merino Country is proud to have contributed a block celebrating the journey of Australian wool - from sheep to finished garment -and our enduring connection with the Ekka and the Queensland Wool industry.

We had alot of fun creating a design that represented "the Paddock to the Parade" with our signature blue and orange, outback queensland colours, in our 100% Merino jersey, carded wool sliver for the sheep, our natural wool jersey for the dress, hand embroidered by Kerrie with wool thread!

The finished quilt is on display in the Ekka 150 – From the Ground Up Exhibition, upstairs in the 7NEWS Community Pavilion throughout the 2026 Ekka. See if you can find our square in the Quilt and send us a photo posing with it!

The country to the city, Ekka (Queensland Royal Show) has always been part of our lives. We started showcasing Merino products in the Wool Pavilion in 1994, and ran the 1988 "Spinning Yarns" & 1989 "Sheep Dreams" Wool Parades.

Kerrie & Mal met in the Stockmans Bar (both had been coming to the Ekka for years at the same time but didn't cross paths until 2002), married and still support not just the Ekka but also the RNA Foundation.

We recently went on a road trip to see our Merino fabric finishers in Melbourne. It's always fascinating to see the process in action & we were especially interested in seeing the decatising, the final step in finishing.

Decatising is what makes our fabric different, it's the process that permanently sets the fibre, controls shrinkage and stabilises the finish. The fabric is rolled onto big drums and then infused with high temperature steam.

It's amazing how many different steps are taken to make Australian Merino wool into the fabric you love & it's done locally... naturally!!

Merino Country owner and founder, Kerrie Richards, recently returned to The Cathedral School of St Anne & St James - Townsville, where she spent her school years as a boarder.

During her visit, Kerrie was both surprised and honoured to be inducted into the school’s Past Students Wall of Honour, recognising her Innovation & Success in Business.

A very special acknowledgement - and a lovely opportunity to return to where part of her journey began and a great catch up with old friends (including lunch in the old dining hall where the food was a definite improvement from years ago!).
